Based in Brisbane, Jardini Pty Ltd is a leading wholesaler and exporter of premium aquatic animals, including marine finfish, corals, and select freshwater species. We strive to follow safe and sustainable practices in both our collection and importing of ornamental species and are developing and expanding our aquaculture sector. We are searching for experienced Aquaculture Technicians to join our team.
The RoleFollowing established procedures and protocols, the primary role of the Aquaculture Technician is animal husbandry and maintaining various Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS). You will be led by our management team, which has over 35 years of combined experience in Aquaculture, Research, and the Aquarium Industry. Successful candidates will be working with a range of species and aquaria applications from live feeds and larval culture to packing and sending fish and corals to customers. This role is primarily based indoors, at our Brisbane-based facility, with collections in the field from time to time. If qualified, there may be scope for suitable candidates to assist the dive team on dive collections if required.
Duties include (but not limited to):
- Feed preparation and Animal Feeding
- Water Quality Monitoring
- Live Feeds Production (Algae, Rotifers, Artemia, Copepods)
- Larval Rearing
- Broodstock Maintenance
- Animal Health Monitoring and System Checks
- Maintaining Record Sheets
- Packing and Logistics
- RAS maintenance
- General Cleaning, Tank, and System Cleaning
- Collections and Fish Handling
Due to the diverse range of species and tasks involved in this role, we are seeking a candidate who is versatile with high attention to detail, and the ability to identify and act on both animal health and technical issues of their life support systems. Candidates will be able to work quickly and accurately in time-pressured tasks, such as packing, and be physically fit and able to work on their feet for extended periods of time. This is a hands-on role, experience with tools, PVC plumbing, pumps, UVs and other RAS support apparatus is favorable.
Though training will be provided by our experienced team, candidates with experience in live feeds and larval culture are highly desirable. Proven aquaculture experience in other species, bringing value to our team, is also looked upon favorably.
Selection Criteria:
Essential:
- BSc in Aquaculture, Marine Science/similar or equivalent experience in the aquaculture or aquarium industry.
- Experience in aquatic animal husbandry.
- Experience maintaining RAS.
- Punctual, Reliable, and Excellent Communication skills.
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions and work with minimal supervision.
- Computer Literate and familiar with Excel/Google Sheets.
- Ability to work outside of normal working hours and offsite as required.
- Able to work a Weekend Roster (e.g. Tues – Sat or Sun - Thurs working week).
- Driver’s License
- Immediate ability to work in Australia (Permanent Resident/Citizen/Working Visa).
Desirable:
- Live feeds experience
- Proven aquaculture experience (Prawn/Finfish/Ornamental Hatchery experience)
- Experience identifying finfish and coral species.
- Experience in packing and logistics.
- Min Open Water and Diving experience.
This is a unique opportunity for experienced aquaculture technicians/aquarists to live and work in Brisbane. Training in highly specialized aquaculture techniques will be provided. Successful candidates will be working with a range of exciting flora and fauna. The company is currently expanding its aquaculture in a new facility and there is room for growth and development in the company.
