About Braybrook College
Braybrook College is a single campus, co-educational, Years 7 to 12 college, largely serving the areas of Braybrook, Sunshine and Footscray. Our current population, of approximately 1350 students, enables a wide curriculum choice to be offered at all levels. We constantly strive to set high academic standards which enable students to move to their chosen career pathway. Approximately 65% of students are from a Language Background other than English, however, many of the remaining students are first generation Australians whose parents were born overseas. The main community group at the college is Vietnamese. However, the student population has backgrounds from approximately 40 different nationalities. In 2023, for example, there are approximately 40 Arabic speaking students.
Responsibilities
- Providing EAL support in the classroom by attending classes as per timetable and breaking down complex tasks set by the teacher into simpler, more manageable steps or translating into first language
- Translating documents as requested by the college including but not limited to school notices and newsletters
- Interpreting for the college community e.g., at school functions, student enrolment interviews and teacher/parent telephone calls or meetings
- Engaging the various Black, Indigenous, People of Colour (BIPOC) communities in college events e.g. helping to run parent information sessions, assisting at parent/teacher interviews, running community-based sessions, organising celebrations
- Running the Power Collective student anti-racism club that meets regularly to raise student concerns, organise celebrations, events, guest speakers, develop leadership skills and organise professional learning
- Supporting weekly Homework Club for EAL students
- Completing Yard Duty as directed by the Daily Organiser
- Establishing and maintaining working relationships with co-workers, leaders, students and the general college community
- Performing duties in an efficient, professional, and courteous manner in accordance with college and Department of Education (DE) values
- Pursuing professional development of skills and knowledge necessary for the effective performance of the role
- Other duties as directed by the Principal and/or Assistant Principal
Skills Required
- Ability to speak, read and write Arabic at an advanced level
- Strong verbal and written communication skills in English and Arabic
- Ability to effectively and sensitively understand student concerns and report to leadership
- Attention to detail
- Ability to work in a team and liaise with the college community
- Ability to build positive relationships with the college’s various BIPOC communities
- Ability to build relationships with staff and students
