Primary objective
The Assistant Commissioner is accountable for delivering effective operational policing, programs and strategies that result in a safer and more
resilient Northern Territory community. The Assistant Commissioner operates at the Executive level, contributes as a member of the Executive
and is responsible for ensuring the organisational strategic objectives are met.
Context statement
The NTPFES is a complex organisation working in partnership with the community to ensure a safe and resilient Northern Territory. Preventing
and addressing DFV is a federal, Northern Territory and NTPFES strategic priority.
The Northern Territory Police Force (NTPF) is committed to working in partnership with governments, Aboriginal and community controlled
organisations and non-government organisations to build a future free from violence.
NTPFES recognise the importance of engaging with young people in positive and innovative ways and prioritising local partnerships,
implementing prevention and engagement strategies to improve social outcomes for disengaged and at risk youth.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Identify and influence the NT Police operating environment by evaluating community needs, optimising and continually improving service
delivery and organisational effectiveness in order to build a safer Northern Territory.
2. Provide leadership on strategic priorities to operational policing members through effective preparedness, prevention, response and
continuous improvement.
3. Provide leadership in the delivery of policing business, services and management of operational issues in accordance with legislation and
policies to achieve overall organisational objectives.
4. Identify and forecast trends and issues likely to impact on policing in the NT and lead assigned corporate improvement programs to deliver
an efficient and effective operational policing service.
5. Lead and champion reform initiatives designed to achieve major cultural change at all levels.
6. Develop and maintain effective partnerships with key stakeholders, both within and external to the NTPFES through effective
communication and engagement.
7. Provide leadership through corporate planning and manage to budget and other organisational targets to deliver high organisational
performance and staff engagement.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Demonstrated outstanding leadership in a complex policing environment focussed on a customer and victim centred approach, collaborative
teamwork and partnerships.
2. Demonstrated experience and knowledge of contemporary policing practices and approaches including high level understanding of change
management techniques and practices to drive change initiatives, empower others and form collaborative partnerships locally and
nationally.
3. Demonstrated high level of conceptual, analytical and problem solving skills and a demonstrated ability to drive accountability and lead by
example.
4. Demonstrated high level written, verbal and presentation skills including confidence with the media to inform the community about, but
not limited to policing services, current and emerging issues and performance.
5. Demonstrated ability to communicate with influence across complex stakeholders and to negotiate persuasively.
6. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with the Commissioner and senior executive to contribute to and support the key strategic
priorities of the organisation.
Desirable
1. Relevant tertiary qualifications.
2. National security clearance.
