This exciting role provides you the opportunity to lead transformational and cultural change to make the way the Attorney-General's Department evaluates its work and its impact on Australia's legal framework more inclusive and culturally appropriate. This is a genuine opportunity to embed self-determination and First Nations evaluation practices into government processes to shape the way evaluation is done at a federal level. 

We are committed to embedding First Nations evaluation practices to ensure the way we work empowers First Nations people and supports the Priority Reforms under the National Agreement on Closing the Gap. 

The Evaluation Insights team is responsible for uplifting the evaluation maturity of the Attorney-General's Department and ensuring we use best-practice evaluation as part of the departments approach to developing evidence-based policy. The Evaluation Insights team is expanding to reflect the commitment of the Attorney-General's Department to drive evaluative culture within government and maintain and strengthen the integrity and transparency of the decisions we make.

As an Assistant Director of Evaluation Insights your role will involve:

  • embed First Nations evaluation practices into governmental policy making and decisions
  • leading the development of a capability and understanding uplift training program on First Nations evaluation
  • providing strategic direction of the evaluation unit in line with First Nations considerations, and whole-of-government, portfolio, and the departments needs and expectations
  • developing and implementing a First Nations evaluation program to both First Nations and non-First Nations specific policy and program teams within the Attorney-General's Department and Portfolio
  • developing community partnerships and collaborating with internal and external stakeholders to ensure that the departments monitoring and evaluation practices are best practice
  • collaborating with line areas to develop culturally safe and informed monitoring and evaluation frameworks
  • building and strengthening partnerships across the department to embed First Nations Data Sovereignty in line with Closing the Gap Priority Reforms
  • leading, managing, and supervising a small team as well as cross-agency and multidisciplinary teams

  • lead the implementation of organisational change
  • expertly lead First Nations evaluation and research projects with best-practice methodologies
  • understand the issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples
  • communicate sensitively and effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
  • lead the development of training, resources and templates
  • project manage major and complex evaluations
  • develop monitoring and evaluation advice and products which are meaningful, well-evidenced, and tailored to their audience
  • identify and build relationships with key stakeholders
  • use a range of written and verbal communication methods appropriate to the audience
  • work in a collaborative environment and with a diverse, inclusive and multi-disciplinary team
