ABOUT THE ROLE
Senator Lidia Thorpe is seeking a passionate and engaged person to join her team in the role of part-time Campaign and Policy adviser based at her Melbourne Electorate Office.
The Campaign and Policy Adviser is a dynamic and varied role, including (but not limited to) supporting and driving the Senator’s campaigns, support policy development, analysis and advice, developing and managing stakeholder relationships, writing speeches and facilitating the Senator’s public engagements. The Campaign and Policy Adviser will work closely with the First Nations Campaigner, the Chief of Staff and the Canberra-based policy team.
PAY AND CONDITIONS
The position is offered under the Members of Parliament (Staff) Act 1984, and employment conditions are outlined in the .
The position is part-time at 0.7 EFT, ideally over 5 days and is ideal to suit school hours. It is offered at an Electorate Officer B classification of $81,666 full time equivalent, per annum. This salary is applied pro rata, and the role attracts 15.4% superannuation in addition to salary. The role attracts an additional Electorate Staff Allowance of $12,907 per annum, in recognition of reasonable additional hours of work and travel outside of business hours.
Ad-hoc training and ongoing professional development is available as part of the Enterprise Agreement and is actively encouraged.
This position is a one year, part-time time contract from commencement, with the potential for extension and ongoing.
KEY WORK AREAS
  • Close engagement with the First Nations campaigner to effectively implement the Senator’s campaigns to achieve her policy objectives
  • Mobilising and supporter engagement
  • Strategy, policy and initiative development and implementation
  • Stakeholder and community engagement
  • Event management
  • Supporting the policy team with the Senator’s parliamentary business and legislation as well as speech writing
  • Occasionally supporting the Senator’s work with parliamentary inquiries and Senate Estimates

  • An understanding of the Australian political context and parliamentary processes
  • Strong organisation, prioritisation and time management skills
  • Demonstrated high level interpersonal, communication and liaison skills
  • Demonstrated ability to respectfully work at a community level to consult and support
  • Demonstrated ability to work at a policy level with stakeholders, be they organisations or individuals
  • Ability to bring people on a journey and mobilise
  • Understanding of the context of First Nations rights and interests within ‘Australian’ society and culture and a strong commitment to First Nations justice
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a small team in a fast-paced environment
  • Experience working in a political, community or campaigning organisation
  • Desirable: experience working in or with First Nations organisations.
