Job description

Applications are sought for the Fellowship in Cardiac Imaging at Western Health.

The Western Health Cardiology Department provides services targeted at the diagnosis, interventional and non-interventional treatment of patients who are affected by cardiovascular disease.  Western Health Cardiology inpatient services and outpatient clinics are provided across Footscray and Sunshine Hospitals.  There is a high volume of echocardiography through the Cardiac Diagnostic Service, with transthoracic, transoesophageal and stress echocardiography. A Cardiac CT Angiography (CTCA) and Cardiac Magnetic Resonance (CMR) imaging service is co-reported with the Radiology department at both sites.

Western Health Cardiology has a major focus on teaching, training and research affiliated with the University of Melbourne.  Registrars and Fellows are expected to be actively engaged in research projects and teaching.  The department is involved in several international multicentre randomised trials as well as independent investigator-initiated research projects. There are dedicated Cardiac Imaging teaching sessions twice weekly.

The Western Health Cardiology Unit is serviced by over 20 VMO Cardiologists, 2 Fellows, 4 Registrars and 4 HMOs. The Registrars comprise of 4 Accredited Cardiology Advanced Trainees.

About the Role

The position commences in early February 2025 until February 2026. The Fellowship is dedicated to training in echocardiography, with the flexibility to gain multi-modality expertise to suit the successful applicant’s interests. There will be a focus on Cardiac Imaging research, including both an investigator-initiated project and critical appraisal of published science.

Trainees will be involved in all aspects of echocardiography including transthoracic, transoesophageal, exercise stress and dobutamine stress echocardiography, including the use of contrast-enhanced and 3D imaging. There is the opportunity to scan patients, though this is not a requirement. The fellow will fulfil the requirements to achieve accreditation in Cardiac CT angiography and will have exposure to CMR. The fellow will be encouraged to think critically and there is an emphasis on understanding the role of a multi-modality approach to diagnosis and management of complex pathology.

About You (Essential Criteria)

  • Successful applicants will be eligible for training in echocardiography in accordance with CSANZ guidelines.
  • The trainee will have completed core advanced FRACP training in Cardiology or its equivalent and have completed basic training in echocardiography in accordance with CSANZ guidelines (Level 1 Competency).
  • Applicants must be eligible for appropriate registration with AHPRA.

Trainees will be required to make a significant contribution to the workflow in the Cardiac Diagnostic Service. They will be involved in the on call roster after hours and on weekends with the fellows and registrars. They will be responsible for assisting with regular audit of the cardiac diagnostic service, present at the Surgical ‘Heart Team Meeting’, and participate in mortality and morbidity reviews. The Fellow will conduct an independent research project and be involved in ongoing research activities within the unit. Candidate interest in obtaining a postgraduate degree through University of Melbourne can be facilitated. The Western Cardiology has strong ties to the Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute, providing an avenue to meaningful academic research.
