After 18 years of service, the Athenaeum Club ‘s Cellarmaster is stepping down from the role, presenting a rare and wonderful opportunity for someone to fill his shoes.

The Role and Responsibilities

We are looking for someone to be the Club’s Beverage Champion! To manage and market all aspects of the Club’s Cellar in accordance with regulatory requirements and the Club’s standards, policies, procedures and protocol.  You will control the Club’s beverage and cellared stock holdings including an onsite cellar and external warehouse storage of over 35,000 bottles. You will liaise with the Events Manager, Operations Manager and F&B Services Manager on all facets of the restaurant and function beverage list to continually improve the member and Club’s restaurant and function services.

Overseeing the daily operations of our cellar, including ordering and receiving deliveries, processing the online wine orders, arranging couriers, invoicing and charging member accounts, administering stocktake and internal stock transfers. Supporting the Club’s Wine Sub-Committee in their duties and ensuring their needs and requirements are met. 

A key responsibility is managing the full time and casual Sommeliers and mentoring and training Food and Beverage staff; effectively and efficiently ensuring high quality standards of service and achieving maximum member satisfaction.  The normal hours of work are business hours Monday to Friday though you will support the team on the floor during lunch service and some evenings during the Club’s signature black tie events such as the annual Presidents Dinner and biannual fine wine events.  Delivering formal staff training will be an ongoing requirement.

You will curate an outstanding wine program whilst keeping costs within budget as approved by the Committee.  Offering expert guidance to members and their guests by recommending wines that complement food choices and meet their preferences will be part of your daily routine. 

About You

You might be someone who has worked in a similar environment, someone who has worked long hours as a Head Sommelier and is looking for the next step up in your career.  You are looking for a new “home” where your expertise will be valued and where you can have a huge impact on the success of the business and the membership. 

The successful candidate will have:

  • a minimum of five years’ experience in a similar role where you have been responsible for managing inventory, planning and organising in a multi-outlet operation,
  • Wine and Spirit Education Trust (WSET) or similar Sommelier qualifications,
  • have an excellent level of Australian food & wine knowledge,
  • an expert palate and the ability to assess wine thoroughly,
  • have excellent customer service skills with the ability to engage and build rapport, developing strong professional relationships with members,
  • have front-end POS experience and excellent computer skills; knowledge of NorthStar is an advantage,
  • have previous service experience in a fine dining establishment,
  • great attention to detail,
  • strong communication skills,
  • a willingness to go above and beyond with an eagerness to support the team in every way you can, 
  • have a strong positive work ethic and be flexible with hours,
  • an ongoing dedication to expand your personal wine knowledge,
  • a passion for quality food, beverage and service excellence.
