Job description

  • 7.00am to 3.00pm, Monday to Friday
  • Pay range is $73,800 - $79,000 per annum plus salary packaging

Harold Hawthorne Community Centre is a not-for-profit organisation based in Carlisle. We are dedicated to assisting people to continue to live independently and with dignity within their community. Our vibrant Centre cooks fresh, delicious and nutritious three-course meals which are served on weekdays for lunch and for events. We also produce fresh and frozen packaged meals for Meals on Wheels delivery services.

We are seeking a qualified Chef or Head Cook to manage kitchen operations and lead the team. Duties include:

  • Be actively involved in the preparation of meals. 
  • Develop and maintain seasonal menus and standardised recipes.
  • Liaise with suppliers to order food supplies and manage stock control. Ensure that purchases meet budgets and specifications. 
  • Lead and supervise a small team of staff including an Assistant Cook and several Kitchen Hands. This includes delivering inductions, giving clear instructions, training and regular appraisals to ensure the team possess suitable skills for their roles.
  • Foster a positive culture of excellence and continuous improvement. 
  • Manage and prepare special food for functions.
  • Ensure compliance with Food Safety Standards and the Food Safety Plan. Ensuring all food safety documentation is maintained on a daily basis. 
  • Maintain rigorous standards of hygiene and cleanliness for food and equipment in line with regulations. 

To succeed in this role, you will have:

  • Certificate IV in Commercial Cookery and Food Safety Supervisor Certificate.
  • A minimum of 3 years’ cooking and leadership experience in a similar position.
  • Experience in an Aged Care or Hospital environment is highly recommended.
  • Understanding of cooking for people with special dietary requirements such as diabetic, texture modified foods and allergies.
  • Self-motivated and the ability to work unsupervised.
  • A supportive team-oriented and collaborative approach.
  • Strong communication, customer service and organisational skills.
  • Excellent knowledge of, and demonstrated experience in, the practical application of Food Safety Standards and Work Health and Safety procedures. Knowledge of current legislation in relation to hygiene for food areas and equipment.
  • National Police Certificate, or ability to obtain one.
