about the role

Chevron Australia has an exciting opportunity for a Chief Medical Officer to join the Health and Medical team. Reporting to the Asia Pacific Regional Health and Medical Manager, this permanent role will be based in Chevron’s new building at One The Esplanade.

The role will lead the Australia Health and Medical team to provide and coordinate medical services to a diverse workforce across the country, ensuring that the workforce is fit for duty, meet the workplace health and safety legislative requirements, and have an integrated well-being program. In partnership with Health, Safety and Environment, Human Resources, Corporate Affairs, Operations, and other teams the Chief Medical Officer is responsible to protect people and deliver value to the enterprise.

Responsibilities for this position may include but are not limited to the following:

Leadership and Strategy:

  • Provide leadership in the development of Chevron Australia health and medical strategy.

  • Serve as the Chief Medical Officer and primary spokesperson for health-related matters in Australia.

  • Develop and implement health and wellness programs that align with the company’s goals and objectives.

  • Lead the medical team, ensuring high-quality medical care and compliance with regulatory standards.

  • Work directly with Chevron Regional Medical Manager to identify opportunities in the business and align strategies on service delivery.

Health and Safety:

  • Oversee occupational health programs, including injury prevention, health promotion, and emergency medical response.

  • Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations and standards.

  • Develop and manage health surveillance programs to monitor and improve employee health.

  • Collaborate closely with the Health, Safety and Environment function on case management, contractor fitness to work, occupational health surveillance and hygiene programs.

Medical Operations:

  • Establish and implement health and management services and programs and monitor performance against established targets

  • Manage the day-to-day operations of remote site-specific medical facilities and services.

  • Provide clinical oversight and direction to medical staff.

  • Develop and manage budgets for medical services and programs.

  • Proactively review and identify gaps in health support; ensure high quality and evidence-based services are provided.

  • Create plans and methods to help FIFO workers and their families, including contributing to the development of resource sector strategies for this purpose.

  • Lead and support the execution of the substance abuse program.

Collaboration and Communication:

  • Collaborate with human resources and other departments to integrate health services with employee benefits and wellness initiatives.

  • Communicate health-related information to employees, management, and external stakeholders.

  • Liaises with corporate affairs to develop and implement health–related Community Engagement programs, particularly in relation to indigenous health and wellness strategies and community health programs.

  • Represent the company at health-related forums, conferences, and public events.

  • Maintain relationships with vendors, contractors, and business partners.

Policy and Compliance:

  • Develop and enforce health policies and procedures to ensure best practices and legal compliance.

  • Stay abreast of new medical technologies and practices and incorporate them into the company’s health programs as appropriate.

  • Ensure the confidentiality and security of employee health information.

Emergency Preparedness:

  • Lead the development and implementation of emergency response plans for health-related incidents.

  • Coordinate medical response in the event of an emergency or disaster.

Professional Development:

  • Promote continuous education and professional development for medical staff.

  • Maintain professional knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, and participating in professional societies.

Reporting and Analysis:

  • Analyze health-related data to identify trends and areas for improvement.

  • Prepare and present reports on health initiatives and outcomes to senior management.

Qualifications:

  • Current Registration with AHPRA as a Medical Practitioner (MBBS or equivalent)

  • A Minimum of 10 years postgraduate experience in healthcare setting is required

  • Experience in Occupational Medicine, ideally gained over a period of 5 years or more

  • Experience in Travel Health

  • Effective communication in English and customer service skills

  • Sound clinical decision-making and problem-solving skills

  • Other postgraduate management qualifications and/or leadership training (preferred)

  • Demonstrated ability to manage a large medical team responsible for a diverse workforce

  • Strong financial, analytical, and business acumen

  • Experience as a physician in the international energy or resource industry (preferred)
