Kilsyth Primary School is located in a quiet residential area of the outer eastern suburbs of Melbourne. Established in 1910, the school site incorporates modern classrooms, playgrounds and a sports oval with manicured gardens, a `frog bog¿, and native bushland zones. There is easy access to public transport, and Elizabeth Bridge Reserve, Churinga Shopping Centre, Kilsyth Sports Centre and Kilsyth Centenary Pool are all within easy walking distance. The school¿s population reflects the characteristics of the local Kilsyth community. Parents and teachers work in an educational partnership to support each child¿s learning needs. Parent involvement in the many aspects of school life is highly valued, both in the classroom and through our working bees and fundraising activities and demonstrates a strong feeling of connectedness. This sense has community grew beyond the school boundaries with the establishment of a Playgroup on the school site and a weekly buddy program with local kindergartens.The current staffing profile of 18.25 EFT staff members includes 1.0 Principal, 1.0 Assistant Principal, 1.0 Learning Specialist, 8.2 Classroom Teachers and 6.15 Educational Support staff.  There is a mix of age and experience across staff members.  In addition, Camp Australia staffs and manages an OSH care program, located on the school site. Our current enrolment of 123 students makes up seven grades 2024. Our Foundation students are taught as a single year level; all other classes operate in multi-age level groups. The school buildings promote collaboration between students across class groups. Our main building contains our Junior School zone, Middle school (Years 3&4), Visual Arts room and Library. Our senior school (Years 5&6) classes are held in the recently built P21 Learning Neighbourhood, affectionately known as the BERBs.All classrooms have operable walls, and the flexibility of these learning spaces allow excellent opportunities for students to develop the collaborative skills essential in the world of today. Over recent years, there has been a clear focus on building positive relationships amongst all groups within the school community.We are currently implementing a School Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS) approach. We draw on Tier 1 interventions in our planning and delivering the classroom. Underpinning this approach are our school values of EXCELLENCE, RESILIENCE and RESPECT.We specifically focus on providing high quality curriculum programs with a clear commitment to student achievement in English and Mathematics and all areas of the Victorian Curriculum. Our specialist program includes Physical Education, Science, Visual Arts and Languages, AUSLAN We use a Levelled Literacy Intervention approach across the school. Our sporting teams, whole school production and Wakakirri performances are flagship activities in our extracurricular program.The structured approach of our programs supports the explicit teaching of ICT skills. The provision of Interactive Whiteboards and Apple TVs in every learning space supports the use of cloud-based learning tools in the classroom. A mix of desktop and mobile devices (including netbooks, notebooks and iPads) throughout the school ensure ready access to ICT tools and the opportunities they provide. Our students are active members of our school community. We have an energetic Student Representative Council, student leadership groups, environmental action groups and student-led lunchtime clubs and activities. An Outside School Hours Care program, operated by Camp Australia, is located on the school site. The school has a clearly articulated Instructional Model and SWPBS approach.
Selection Criteria

SC1      Demonstrated high level of knowledge of the relevant curriculum, including the ability to incorporate the teaching of literacy and numeracy skills. Demonstrated high level of ability to respond to student learning needs.

SC2      Demonstrated high level of ability to plan for and implement high impact teaching strategies, guided by how students learn, and evaluate the impact of learning and teaching programs on student learning growth.   

SC3      Demonstrated high level of ability to monitor and assess student learning. Demonstrated high level of ability to use data to inform teaching practice and to provide feedback on student learning growth and achievement to students and parents.

SC4      Demonstrated high level of interpersonal and communication skills. Demonstrated high level of ability to establish and maintain collaborative relationships with students, parents, colleagues and the broader school community to support student learning, agency, wellbeing and engagement.

SC5      Demonstrated behaviours and attitudes consistent with Department values. Demonstrated high level of ability to reflect upon practice and engage in professional learning to continually improve the quality of teaching.

Role

Range 2Classroom Teachers play a significant role in assisting the school to improve student performance and educational outcomes determined by the school strategic plan and state-wide priorities and contributing to the development and implementation of school policies and priorities. 

A critical component of this work will focus on increasing the knowledge base of staff within their school about student learning and high quality instruction to assist their school to define quality teacher practice.

Range 2Classroom Teachers will be expected to:

  • Have the content knowledge and pedagogical practice to meet the diverse needs of all students
  • Model exemplary classroom practice and mentor/coach other teachers in the school to engage in critical reflection of their practice and to support staff to expand their capacity
  • Provide expert advice about the content, processes and strategies that will shape individual and school professional learning
  • Supervise and train one or more student teachers
  • Assist staff to use student data to inform teaching approaches that enable targets related to improving student learning outcomes to be achieved.
Responsibilities

The role of Classroom Teacher may include but is not limited to:

  • Direct teaching of groups of students and individual students;
  • Contributing to the development, implementation and evaluation of a curriculum area or other curriculum program within the school;
  • Undertaking other classroom teaching related and organisational duties as determined by the School Principal;
  • Participating in activities such as parent/teacher meetings; staff meetings; camps and excursions;
  • Undertaking other non-teaching supervisory duties.
Who May Apply

Teachers currently registered or eligible for registration with the Victorian Institute of Teaching and qualified to teach and/or have demonstrated experience in the curriculum area(s) specified for the position.

VIT LANTITE

To be eligible for employment, transfer or promotion in the principal or teacher class a person must have provisional or full registration from the Victorian Institute of Teaching. In addition, from 3 August 2020, to be eligible for employment in the principal class or teacher class, a person who graduated from a Victorian Initial Teacher Education program after 1 July 2016, must demonstrate that they have passed the literacy and numeracy test for initial teacher education (LANTITE) requirements. This condition is satisfied where the LANTITE requirement is part of the Victorian Initial Teacher Education program completed by the person.
