Job description

The Clinical Nurse Consultant (CNC), Intellectual Disability and Mental Health, will provide guidance and consultation to Mental Health Service staff and General Health Acute Facilities within Norther Sydney Local Health District (NSLHD), on the delivery of care and the development of pathways for consumers with Intellectual Disability and Mental Health concerns.

Where you'll be working


You will be working on the NSLHD Macquarie Hospital site, however this role is area wide and will require travel to NSLHD Community and Inpatient settings and across the district.

What you'll be doing

The NSLHD Nursing and Midwifery Workforce will be compassionate, competent, confident, contemporary, capable and committed to leading person-centred health care.

  • The Clinical Nurse Consultant, Intellectual Disability and Mental Health provides and expert patient-centred evidence-based consultancy practice participating in direct care provision for people with an Intellectual Disability and Mental Health issue, presenting to MHDA Services within NSLHD. Identifies and adopts innovative clinical practice models relating to Intellectual disability and Mental Health
  • Contributes to the development, management and evaluation of clinical processes, e.g. models of care, clinical pathways, policy, procedure and guidelines, and participates on state and national forums as delegated. 
  • Initiates, conducts and disseminates the findings of locally based research in relation to Intellectual Disability and Mental Health, and participates as a co-researcher in larger studies in Intellectual Disability and Mental Health, managing research projects requiring clinical contribution from others within the MHDA Services and working in collaboration with the Associate Professor of MHDA Nursing. 
  • Participates in formal and informal education programs pertaining to the role. Identifies clinical education needs and works with the MHDA CETD team to provide specialist training. Undertakes primary responsibility for planning and implementation of specialist clinical education for the MHDA/NSLHD within the identified specialty. 
  • Develops significant education and communication resources for consumers and their families, nurses and other health care professionals. Participates in the development and delivery of post graduate programs such as academic facilities relating to Nursing. 
  • Undertakes primary responsibility for the planning and implementation of specialist clinical education for the MHDA/NSLHD within the specialty of Intellectual Disability and Mental Health, and plans, implements and evaluates annual plan for nurse consultancy service through the initiation, development, implementation and evaluation of strategic changes for Intellectual Disability and Mental Health.
  • The CNC will work according to the NSLHD safe work methods and guidelines, adhere to all NSW Health and NSLHD Policies and Procedures and will work collaboratively with the MHDA CNC Practice Development. The position holder must also undertake any other reasonable duties as directed within their capability.

Candidates will need to meet the following criteria:

  2. Registered with Authority to Practice with Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency. Minimum five years full time post graduate experience with 3 years full time equivalent in the specialty field. In addition the applicant must have an approved post graduate qualification (minimum Grad Diploma/Certificate level) or evidence of working towards Masters level qualification.
  3. Demonstrated clinical leadership skills and an ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary framework with a demonstrated commitment to excellence in nursing practice. Demonstrated ability to undertake quality improvement and research activities that influence and enhance clinical practice and implement change.
  4. Demonstrated effective communication and interpersonal skills across a variety of mediums and an understanding of the practice development framework. Demonstrated computer skills with experience using MS Office programs and electronic filing systems. Current NSW Drivers License. 
  5. Demonstrated ability to work effectively both as a member of a multidisciplinary team and independently.
