About the Law Council of Australia

The Law Council of Australia represents the legal profession at the national level, to speak on behalf of its Constituent Bodies on national issues, and to promote the administration of justice, access to justice and general improvement of the law. 

The Law Council advises governments, courts, and federal agencies on ways in which the law and the justice system can be improved for the benefit of the community. The Law Council also represents the Australian legal profession overseas and maintains close relationships with legal professional bodies throughout the world.

The Law Council was established in 1933 and represents 16 Australian state and territory law societies and bar associations and the Law Firms Australia, which are known collectively as the Council’s Constituent Bodies. 

The Secretariat serves the Law Council nationally and is based in Canberra.

About the Section

The Family Law Section (FLS) of the Law Council of Australia is the largest professional association for family law practitioners, with a membership of more than 3,000 from all Australian States and Territories and internationally.

The Section is constituted, organised, and regulated by by-laws approved by the Executive Officers of the Law Council of Australia.  The work of the Section is guided by its strategic plan.

About the Role

The FLS Communications and Membership Coordinator reports to and works in close co‑operation with the Executive Officer, Family Law Section. The Communications and Membership Coordinator will also work closely with the FLS Executive, Members, and any external contractors and consultants engaged by the FLS.

Part-time applications will be considered for this role. 

Duties and Responsibilities

Communications

  • Co-ordinate the communication, design and development of publications including Australian Family Lawyer, Duty List videos, FLS news and specific marketing campaigns for events, special projects (such as the biennial national conference) and professional development activities. 
  • Write, edit and proofread FLS email communications.
  • Manage the FLS social media accounts including content creation and promotion.
  • Liaise with Law Council Australia Public Affairs and Communications division.
  • Manage, update and maintain the FLS website.
  • Develop and implement social media strategies and content (Linkedln, Facebook, Twitter) to drive member and stakeholder engagement.
  • Work with the Events and Projects Coordinator in the production and execution of communication strategies for events and other special projects. 

Membership

  • Membership database management (including data entry).
  • Working with the Executive Officer, Family Law Section, to develop and implement membership recruitment and retention strategies.
  • Preparation of statistical and financial reports relating to member services and engagement.
  • Administration and processing of membership applications and renewals.
  • Liaise with and provide contact point for enquiries from FLS members, in a timely and professional manner.

Support 

  • Liaise with all IT external providers regarding FLS website, FLS App and FLS software relating to membership, events and publications.
  • Use membership, event and publication software including Adobe Creative Cloud, InDesign, Premiere Pro, Joomla and/or ACY Mailing systems.
  • Working with the Administrative Coordinator, provide general administrative support for the FLS Executive and Executive Officer, as required.
  • Such other support as may be required for the Family Law Section team. 

Selection Criteria

Essential Criteria 

  1. High level writing and editing abilities, with an emphasis on accuracy and attention to detail. 
  2. Highly developed interpersonal skills.
  3. Demonstrated exceptional written and oral communication skills.
  4. Demonstrated reliability in meeting deadlines, setting realistic goals and prioritisation skills.

Desirable Criteria 

  1. A working knowledge of website coordination, development and maintenance.
  2. Experience working with data management and registration systems. 
  3. Experience in Adobe Creative Cloud, InDesign and Premiere Pro highly regarded.
  4. A working knowledge of Joomla and/or ACY Mailing systems highly regarded.
  5. Base level understanding of legal terminology highly regarded.
  6. Tertiary education highly regarded.
