The Role

We are looking for a Computational Scientist for an exciting role working within our Genome Imaging Center, headed by Associate Professor Mathias Francois.

The primary function of the research officer is to develop and implement computer software solutions to push the boundary of the current analytical methods. 

 The role has two key objectives:

  • Developing competitive funded research project
  • Assisting Centre users

1. The primary objective of this position is to develop a research project with general and specific computational analytical skills applied to quantitative molecular imaging of the genome to study the molecular principles of gene regulation. Typically, this will involve methods and software development to implement a pre-existing analysis pipeline.
 
2. In terms of support of the Genome Imaging Centre, the applicant will provide assistance to users in the areas of imaging data analysis. Scope will include choice of appropriate software, adaptation of software to the centre needs, integration with high speed computing platforms such as MASSIVE, development of appropriate user interfaces, and training centre users in software application.

The successful candidate will:

  • have a PhD in computational biology or engineering & IT
  • strong analytical and problem solving skills,
  • computer literate in standard research software, proficient with coding (Python, R, MatLab)
  • be highly motivated and capable of independent work
  • have a strong team focus
  • possess excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to work with a diverse range of people and within established collaborative teams
  • have knowledge of a research/laboratory environment and relevant requirements
  • be computer literate in standard/specific research software
  • be able to maintain thorough laboratory records
  • good numeracy and literacy skills,
  • ability to meet deadlines and exceed agreed goals,
  • ability to assist in the supervision of students,
  • good judgement with an ability to balance the needs of all stakeholders,
  • ability to comply with standard work instructions and procedures,
  • demonstrated commitment to EEO & WHS, by example

Postdocs:

  • have experience in the analysis of experimental results and preparation of research presentations and publications
  • experience in the supervision of research students and/or junior staff in laboratory setting
  • a demonstrated publication records
  • the ability to write journal articles, grant applications and keep thorough notes.

Desirable skills:

  • Expertise in data science
  • Research, design, build and own end-to-end machine learning services
  • Diverse cross-functional team
