The State Library of New South Wales is one of Australia's oldest and most important public institutions. Collecting actively since 1826, the Library preserves and presents the social, cultural and scientific history of our State and our Nation for the benefit of all.

We are seeking a conservator with extensive experience in book conservation to join our Collection Care team.

 About this opportunity
In this role you will –

  • Propose and undertake preservation and conservation of items in the collection of the

State Library in accordance with Library policy and the professional code of ethics, to ensure that the collection is stable and accessible.

  • Identify risks and problems; identify, prioritise and confirm chosen treatment option; and provide detailed and thorough treatment proposals with time estimates.
  • Research and undertake analysis of collection material and develop methodology for, lead and undertake collection surveys.
  • Apply practical skills to the preparation of items for loans, exhibitions and displays, including the preparation of relevant documentation, preparing items for transport, couriering items in transit and installing items in in-house and external exhibitions.
  • Produce and maintain appropriate documentation, including condition reports and treatment proposals.
  • Develop, prepare, and deliver training, workshops, seminars and tours, and answer public inquiries, as well as represent the Branch and the Library at internal and external functions and conferences.
  • Contribute to the development, documentation and implementation of branch procedures, and prepare and obtain quotes for supplies and equipment.
  • Contribute to and implement safe work practices that comply with the requirements of work health & safety legislation, policy and procedures.

 About you: 

To be successful in this role, you will have the following knowledge and experience:

- Tertiary qualifications in materials conservation; or an appropriate qualification in a related field, plus two years’ relevant conservation experience; and a minimum of five years’ relevant conservation experience working under the supervision of an experienced, qualified conservator. - Experience in materials conservation within at least one specialist area, and well-developed knowledge of the philosophy, concepts and history of materials conservation, storage conditions, and related scientific processes. - An in-depth understanding of conservation ethics as adopted by the Australian Institute for the Conservation of Cultural Materials Inc

Talent Pool
