Our client, an established public sector healthcare provider, operates a 350 bed secondary care hospital providing medical and surgical services across the southern region of New Zealand. 

The hospital has a theatre complex consists of seven operating theatres, but current expansion will make that nine theatres plus use of a theatre at a local private hospital. It also has a closed 6 bed Level 2 ICU (soon to be expanded to 8 beds) providing a high standard of general intensive care, including complex multi-system support (invasive mechanical ventilation, cardiovascular monitoring and support, renal replacement therapy). It is a mixed unit, admitting medical, surgical, trauma and paediatric patients.

The Anaesthetic Department is staffed by 26 specialist anaesthetists, 8 registrars and 6 senior house officers. It currently operates 2 separate on-call rosters for anaesthesia and intensive care.

The team covers almost all sub-specialties (except neurosurgery and cardiac surgery) which will allow successful applicants to participate in the  f ull spectrum of anaesthesia services provided by the department including intensive care medicine if suitably qualified.

The unit is accredited by CICM (College of Intensive Care Medicine) and the ANZCA (Australia and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists) for Basic and Advanced Training. 

Responsibilities

  • Preoperative, peri-operative and post operative care for patients undergoing surgical or other interventional procedures
  • Assess and manage patients admitted to the ICU (if appropriate)
  • Work 40 hours per week plus on call duties
  • Teach and supervise resident medical officers (RMOs)
  • Contribute to this hospital's wider medical team as an active and collaborative member.
Requirements
  • Fellowship of the Australia and New Zealand College of Anaesthesia (FANZCA) (or equivalent overseas qualification).
  • Medical Degree recognised by WHO 
  • Registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand, or be eligible for vocational or provisional vocational registration
