We are seeking an experienced Radiation Oncologist for a full time, permanent position with a regional haematology and oncology service working across several  public sector hospitals in New Zealand. The service caters to a population of over 600,000 across a wide area and some travel may be required. The scope of practice is generalist although subspeciality interests may be accommodated.

The department has a wide-bore CT-simulator, 3 Varian Truebeam linear accelerators each with a six degrees of freedom couch, 1 Siemens multi-modality linear accelerator due to be replaced with a Varian Truebeam in the near future and a superficial X-ray unit. The department uses RayStation treatment planning system and MOSAIQ patient management system.  There are well established and accredited IMRT, VMAT, DIBH and IGRT and SBRT programs.

This department is the first in New Zealand to be developing satellite radiation treatment units in the region which will be operational in the next few years to ensure  patients can access radiation treatment as close to home as possible.
  

Key Role Responsibilities and Duties

  1. You will  join a team of seven Radiation Oncologists with a variety of specialist interests in all adult malignancies
  2. You will deliver clinical care to patients requiring radiation oncology services 
  3. You will conduct outpatient clinics and ward rounds, and other duties, using the allocated time efficiently and effectively towards achieving
    the goals of the Annual Plan.
  4. When necessary, you will assist in the management of patients with emergencies.
  5. You will see and advise promptly on patients referred for a specialist opinion; provide and/or supervise clinical care including the
    assessment, investigation, treatment and appropriate referral of patients who present to the Radiation Oncology Service
  6. Share on-call duty periods, providing 24 hour cover for the acute radiation oncology service
  7. You will provide clinical supervision and teaching for House Surgeons and radiation oncology Registrars and provide education for Medical Officers, resident medical officers, and other staff as appropriate, both formally and informally.

Requirements
  • Medical Degree recognised by WHO 
  • FRACP or equivalent specialist qualification
  • Registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand, or be eligible for vocational or provisional vocational registration
  • Proven knowledge of modern skills and techniques within Radiation Oncology
  • Demonstrated ability to provide a high standard of clinical care, management and time management skills
  • Commitment to continually updating skills and treatment methods.
  • Teaching skills in respect of junior medical staff, other staff
  • Demonstrated understanding of departmental  / service  development and the provision of strong clinical governance.
