Job description

The Role
As a General Surgeon, you will assume a pivotal role in delivering surgical services and improving healthcare for the diverse Goldfields community. Your responsibilities will include providing exceptional surgical care to patients by overseeing, coordinating, and managing the treatment of General Surgery patients in the Goldfields region. Collaborating with an experienced and diverse team dedicated to teamwork, teaching, and mentoring, you will play a vital role in mentoring junior medical staff. This involves fostering the development of their clinical skills, ensuring adherence to standards, and facilitating effective communication with patients and fellow healthcare practitioners. Your involvement in teaching programs will aim to inspire and educate undergraduate medical students, contributing to the nurturing of the future generation of medical professionals. Additionally, you will provide administrative leadership, working in collaboration with other Surgeons and the clinical nurse specialist of Surgery.
The Location
Situated approximately 600km from the state capital, Perth, this town stands out as a unique anomaly in Australia-an enduring goldmining town that has been in operation since 1893, unlike the typical ones that last only a few years. The town's main street is adorned with magnificent buildings, each serving as a testament to the wealth that has been amassed over the years. It is a city that deserves to be appreciated and cherished. The Goldfields - Esperance region has a relatively young population hence there is a wide variety of surgical presentations. There is also a sizable population of Aboriginal patients providing fantastic opportunities to learn their culture and be involved in the care of these patients close to home.
The Facility
Our client operates a regional public hospital in WA, boasting 131 beds and a team of over 350 qualified medical practitioners. In a significant $59.6 million redevelopment of the main campus, completed in 2015, visitors and locals now enjoy access to upgraded, modern treatment facilities. This redevelopment included earlier phases that incorporated a palliative care unit, a new emergency department, a high dependency unit, and a medical imaging department. The completion of clinical works seamlessly integrates with these earlier phases, enhancing the overall healthcare infrastructure.
Remuneration
Consultant Year 1-9 is $375,863 - $477,339 per annum. The salary range is inclusive of
  • base salary
  • a professional development allowance of $31,926 per annum
  • 11% employer contribution towards superannuation.
The salary for this position is based on a Full Time salary under the WA Health System Medical Practitioners AMA Industrial Agreement 2022.
The Requirements
  • Eligible for registration by the Medical Board of Australia.
  • Fellowship with the Royal Australian College of Surgeons or equivalent at the date of commencing duties.
  • Member of the Gastroenterology Society of Australia (GESA) for upper and lower endoscopies.
  • Demonstrated extensive training and experience in General Surgery.
  • Demonstrated well developed communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated effective participation and leadership in a multi-disciplinary team environment. Demonstrated interest in teaching and research.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of the complexities of regional and remote hospital based health services.
  • Knowledge and understanding of continuous quality improvement principles and their practical application.
  • Current knowledge of legislative obligations for Equal Opportunity, Disability Services and Occupational Safety and Health, and how these impact on employment and service delivery.
  • Eligible for or in possession of a current C or C-A class driver's licence.
Desirable
  • Knowledge and understanding of the rural medical environment.
  • Substantial and current experience in relevant research including study design, implementation, evaluation, presentation and publication.
