About the Role
Are you a highly skilled and passionate plastic and reconstructive surgeon or senior trainee seeking to develop your skills in hand surgery? The Royal Adelaide Hospital is seeking a dedicated and motivated individual to join the Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery Unit from June 2024. This is an exciting opportunity to work with leading experts in the field and gain invaluable experience in hand and upper limb, as well as in the broader specialty of Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery.
Working primarily under the supervision of our dedicated hand surgeons, the Hand Fellow will have the opportunity to:
  • Be the primary surgeon (where appropriate) in a wide range of hand surgery cases, including:
  • Brachial plexus injuries/conditions
  • Schwanomas, other nerve tumours and ganglions
  • Complex nerve and tendon grafts, repairs and reconstructions
  • Hand/upper limb revascularisations and/or replantation's (acute)
  • Dupuytrens/carpal tunnel/trigger/pulley releases
  • Tenolysis and fasciectomies
  • Acute management of fractures and soft tissue injuries
  • Exposure to upper limb free tissue transfers and reconstructions
  • Exposure to all areas of plastic and reconstructive surgery
  • Exposure to burns surgery
  • Actively participate in and manage local anaesthetic and WALANT operating lists
  • Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to deliver world-class patient care.
  • Mentor and train junior staff and medical students through formal and informal sessions.
  • Participate in continuous professional development activities.
  • Manage patients in all settings (outpatients, inpatients, operating theatres, and the emergency department).
  • Participate in a combined on-call hand trauma roster with orthopaedics
  • Participate in an on-call roster, including managing facial trauma
  • Extensive operating time in elective, combined and emergency theatres.
  • Manage the day-to-day operations of the Unit and its trainees.
About the Unit
The Royal Adelaide Hospital is the largest hospital in South Australia, providing world class health care and facilities, it is the most advanced hospital in Australia. The Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery Unit at the Royal Adelaide Hospital sees over 3500 inpatient admissions and more than 8500 outpatient encounters each year in our state-of-the-art quaternary health facility. We provide our services to patients of South Australia, as well as patients from the Northern Territory and far west regions of New South Wales and Victoria.
The Unit has 12 Consultant Plastic & Reconstructive Surgeons, 2 Senior Medical Practitioners, 5 Registrars, 3 Fellows and 4 Junior Medical Officers. The Unit has a dedicated 16-bed inpatient ward and a dedicated operating theatre with specialised equipment and nursing staff. Our outpatient clinic is also staffed by specialist nurses and is co-located with specialist allied health staff.
The Unit works in close collaboration with other specialties including Orthopaedics, Colorectal, Gynae-Oncology, Ophthalmology, Neurosurgery, Cleft & Craniofacial, Oral-Maxillofacial, Breast-Endocrine and General Surgery among many others.

Essential Requirements
  • Bachelor of Medicine; Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) or equivalent, making the incumbent eligible for registration as a medical practitioner with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
  • Completion or nearing completion of Surgical Education & Training
  • Extensive experience in the field of Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery
  • Completion of or nearing completion of FRACS (or equivalent)
  • Completion of an AO Fracture Course
  • Current National Police Clearance (NPC)
  • Working with Children Check (WWCC)
  • Immunisation screening as indicated in the role description. SA Health Services are required to implement the
