ABOUT THE ROLE

AFL Cape York has an exciting full-time Cook position available at our AFL Cape York House for Boys, for someone wanting to pursue a career in the Boarding/Community Services industry.

Reporting to the Boarding Manager, the Cook is responsible for all areas of kitchen operations and providing nutritional, well-balanced meals throughout the school term. These meals include breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks to meet the dietary needs of our young people.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Purchase provisions required each week/month and regular maintenance of stock (in line with budget)
  • Create set meal plans on a 28-day cycle including breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks
  • Prepare and cook all meals and snacks daily in line with set meal plans
  • Ensure compliance with food safety and hygiene requirements and all other relevant OH&S practices 
  • Fulfil an appropriate duty of care for all young people while maintaining an environment that is filled with fun and laughter
  • Undertake regular and positive communication with Boarding Manager, Residential Boarding Supervisors and other stakeholders of AFL Cape York House
  • Cater, support and assist events and functions including residential, sporting and community activities and external facility hire
  • Potential shift and weekend work
  • Undertake other duties as directed by the Boarding Manager.

Skills & Knowledge

  • High level of personal and professional time management/organisational skills
  • Customer/Client centric 
  • Active person who likes to have fun and has a passion for cooking
  • Able to walk into a commercial kitchen and immediately start cooking
  • Cater to a range of dietary requirements with consideration given to the cultural needs of students.

Experience & Qualifications

  • Certificate II or above in Kitchen Operations 
  • Food Safety Supervisor certificate (or willing to obtain)
  • Experience working with youth including from different cultures and backgrounds
  • Positive Working with Children Blue Card (or eligible to apply)
  • First Aid Qualification (or willing to obtain)
REMUNERATION/ENTITLEMENTS
  • Dependent on qualifications and experience
  • Up to 12 weeks’ leave (during Queensland school holiday period)
  • This job involves some weekend work and afternoon/evening work on weekdays.
