Are you ready for a career with impact? To work for an organisation that informs and challenges government to improve outcomes for citizens?

Who are we?

The Audit Office of New South Wales is recognised as a centre of excellence within the professional services sector. For almost 200 years, the Auditor-General has assisted the parliament of New South Wales to hold government accountable for its use of public resources. We do this by conducting independent audits across a diverse client base in sectors including community services, health, education, justice, emergency services, transport, planning, environment and local government.

We have a people focused culture built on trust, support and respect. Our culture is supported by values of integrity, curiosity and open-mindedness, speaking out when we need to and ultimately taking pride in the important work we do.

How will you contribute?

As a Data Analyst you will undertake and participate in data and analytics engagements and projects across our financial and performance audit branches, as part of a team, to ensure the timely, effective, and efficient achievement of goals.  Reporting to the Data Manager, you will work closely with a team of passionate and well-regarded specialists.

Key responsibilities of this role include:

  • Assist with delivery of initiatives and projects in the Office’s Data Strategy and Roadmap, including implementation of new tools and technologies.
  • Build personal competency, knowledge and technical proficiency to contribute to more complex data and analytics assignments.
  • Ensure quality and timely data and analytics outputs are achieved by maintaining strong and professional relationships with auditees and proactively communicating with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Identify critical issues that may adversely impact outcomes and escalate them appropriately.
  • Assist in providing sound and well-reasoned documentation and analysis to support data insights and outputs, including highlighting data limitations.
  • Contribute to developing a data culture at the Audit Office by assisting with preparing training material, developing guidance and other materials and participating in awareness raising activities.
  • Ensure compliance with the Audit Office Code of Conduct and all other internal policies, business rules and procedures including records management and workplace health and safety policies.

What will you need to succeed?
We are seeking someone who has strong analytical skills and attention to detail, with the ability to derive insights from complex datasets.  We are seeking an experienced Data Analyst with strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively within a team environment.

The ideal candidate will have experience working with stakeholders to understand business requirements and an ability to convey technical information to non-technical audiences.  You will be someone who prides themselves with high personal integrity and professionalism.

You will also need:

  • Understanding of relevant legislation, professional standards and auditing concepts and techniques.
  • Knowledge and ability to write programs and scripts in a contemporary computer programming language (preferably SQL, R, ACL and Python) and produce data visualisations in PowerBi.
  • Advanced skills in Microsoft Excel.
  • Tertiary qualification in a relevant discipline that requires analysis of complex information, interpretation, and use of technology, e.g. Data Science, IT, Mathematics (majoring in statistics), Commerce or Finance is required.
  • Australian permanent resident or citizen or New Zealand citizen.

What are the benefits?

On offer is a 35-hour work week and a total remuneration package (including superannuation) from $99,802 to $110,124 per annum, subject to negotiation, depending on experience, skills and capabilities. As well as access to flexible work practices and arrangements.

The Audit Office is a rewarding, challenging and impactful place to work where we value diversity and take a collaborative approach to ‘getting things done’. Here you can have a career with purpose, and real work-life balance as well as unique opportunities for professional development and personal growth.

Our flexible work practices provide our employees with choice in the way they work, within the context of their roles, creating a diverse, skilled and motivated workforce capable of delivering quality products and efficient services. This means that some days you’ll be in the office or at a client site, surrounded by peers, colleagues or clients and working collaboratively. Other days, you’ll be working where you choose, this could include a residence located anywhere within Australia, so you can have the focused environment you need to get the task at hand done best. Our flexible approach to work means you’ll enjoy the best of both worlds when you join the Audit Office.

If you do not live in Sydney, it is important to understand that when you are required to attend head office or a client site within the Sydney metropolitan area, you will need to cover the associated travel and accommodation costs.

How can you get started?

The Audit Office of New South Wales values diversity and inclusion in the workplace. We welcome and encourage applications from people of all ages and genders, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, culturally and linguistically diverse groups and those with a disability.

Your application must include your resume, as well as a cover letter that addresses these two targeted questions:

1. Communication skills are vital for effective data analysis. Can you provide an example of a complex data analysis project you worked on and how you communicated the findings to non-technical stakeholders? How did you ensure clarity and understanding? (300 words maximum)

2. Can you provide an example of a time when you conducted thorough documentation and analysis to support data insights, including addressing data limitations? How did your analysis contribute to decision-making or problem-solving? (300 words maximum)
