The role

The Data Services section within the Enterprise Data and Digital branch creates, implements, and promotes the policies, processes and standards that will enable Geoscience Australia to manage its digital science data according to current best practice throughout its lifecycle. The section consults with internal and external research, government and industry partners to establish collaborative data frameworks, architectures and models within Geoscience Australia and across broader national and international communities of practice. The section innovates, builds, and maintains tools, systems, processes and governance that enable digital data management, cataloguing and open data delivery. 

The Data and Catalogue group sits within the Data Governance and Catalogue Team and is responsible for ensuring that Geoscience Australia's data and information resources are discoverable and accessible in an international standards compliant catalogue. The team is also responsible for the delivery of data and information products as well as maintaining the corporate data store and corporate data archive. 

The Data Catalogue Officer role will directly manage the metadata standards implementation used by Geoscience Australia for the Enterprise Catalogue. Under the general direction of the Manager, Data and Catalogue, the role will also support data and data product publishing.

Under broad direction from the Manager, Data and Catalogue, this role will: 

• Manage metadata quality and the implementations of standards within the Enterprise Catalogue, provide expert technical and content related advice on creation and maintenance of metadata records

• Lead the development and documentation of GA metadata profile

• Support the Manager of Data and Catalogue team in cataloguing and publishing data and data products

• Support the development and documentation of the data and product cataloguing publishing workflow procedures

• Participate, as required, in other internal and external working groups and committees that supports GA Standards work, and the Enterprise Data and Digital Branch 

• Support and contribute to the success of the Data Services section.

• Present messages confidently focussing on clear communication of key points; select the appropriate medium for conveying information

• Operate in a professional manner when representing the organisation in public and internal forums confidently present messages in a clear and concise manner, focussing on key points and using language appropriate for the audience 

• Adhere to the APS values and code of conduct and consistently behave in an honest, ethical and professional way 

Required Skills, Knowledge, Experience and or Qualifications

• Demonstrated experience in contemporary data management, science data formats and large data storage practices in an enterprise infrastructure environment 

• Demonstrated knowledge of the ISO19115 metadata standard 

• Demonstrated experience in the application of GeoNetwork catalogue, publishing processes, and data transfer technologies like FileZilla, Notepad++ and Cloudberry  

• Build and sustain positive relationships with team members, stakeholders and clients and proactively offer assistance to ensure a mutually beneficial relationship

• Work collaboratively and operate as an effective member of the team
