The Position

The Deputy Ombudsman works closely with the Ombudsman to ensure delivery of the key statutory functions under the Ombudsman Act 1973 (Vic)and related legislation, and partners internally with the Chief Operating Officer to provide support and advice to the Ombudsman in setting strategy, performance expectations and quality standards. The Deputy Ombudsman represents the Ombudsman as required and promotes the work of the organisation.

Responsibilities of the Deputy Ombudsman include staff leadership and development, ensuring that the statutory functions are consistently performed to a high standard and delivered in a timely fashion. The Deputy Ombudsman plays a leading role in the development of policy recommendations and stakeholder engagement.

Effectiveness in this position requires proven senior leadership capability, the ability to establish and maintain sound relationships with key stakeholders, excellent analytical, conceptual and problem-solving ability, highly developed communication, consultation, negotiation and influencing skills.

Demonstrated experience in public sector decision making and understanding of the principles of administrative law is expected. A law degree and senior level experience in complaint handling and investigations are highly desirable.

The Organisation

The Victorian Ombudsman (VO) is independent of Government and answerable to the Victorian Parliament, in part through the Integrity and Oversight Committee of the Parliament.

The purpose of the VO is to ensure fairness for the public in their dealings with the Victorian public sector, to improve public administration, and to engage with the public sector and the broader community. The Ombudsman Act 1973 (Vic) is the governing legislation.

The VO's role is to ensure that the services of state and local government, and other public sector organisations are delivered in a fair and reasonable manner that is compatible with the Charter of Human Rights and Responsibilities Act 2006 (Vic) and that human rights have been taken into consideration in decision making.
