Development Services branch enable sustainable development for the community on the Sunshine Coast by working with industry stakeholders to achieve timely, customer focused development assessment services, advice and advocacy in the areas of planning, engineering, environment, landscape, building, plumbing and legislative compliance.

Our region is transforming from a regional centre to a regional city, promising offering job stability and career development as we tackle some of our biggest projects to date. In this role, you will be exposed to interesting and challenging planning work. 

The Development Planner role provides planning advice and assessment in relation to development applications, ensuring compliance with statutory timelines and promoting a consistent approach for planning assessment activities to achieve Council’s growth management and sustainability outcomes.  We support and encourage team members to share ideas, expertise and creative innovation in operations, work procedures, planning practices and service delivery.

As a Development Planner working on the Sunshine Coast, you’ll get to see projects from inception to delivery and be able to see your impact on shaping a more sustainable future in a complex urban environment.

The Development Planner will:

  • Research and provide advice for planning matters and the efficient assessment of development applications to all internal and external customers to deliver on Council’s commitment for efficient and effective development services.
  • Function as Project Manager and process, assess and negotiate on a range of development applications as part of a multi-disciplinary team, in a timely manner, while maintaining a strong customer service focus.
  • Develop professional working relationships with internal and external customers.
  • Prepare high quality reports, recommendations, correspondence, briefing notes and information documents relevant to development assessment and other statutory matters.
  • Prepare Standard and Full Planning and Development Certificates.
     

This position is located in Sunshine Coast City Hall, based in the heart of Maroochydore CBD. This state of the art and sustainable building is designed to achieve an innovative and collaborative workspace.
 

About you

We are looking for positive and collaborative team members to join our Planning Assessment Team in a full time or part time capacity.  We have multiple positions available including a permanent role, and other fixed term options.

As a requirement of this role, you possess recognised tertiary qualifications in urban planning or that satisfy membership status of the Planning Institute of Australia.

You will have demonstrated knowledge of and the ability to apply the relevant planning and environment legislation, regulations, policies, statutory procedures and requirements for land use planning and assessment of development applications.

You will possess time management, work prioritisation and organisational skills to achieve successful outcomes often within a political environment and with stakeholders with competing interests.

You are able to work as an effective team member, in an environment that encourages knowledge sharing, job and/or task rotation and professional and personal development.

You will be a strong communicator with an ability to maintain composure and objectivity in balancing competing demands and workplace priorities that reflects a strong customer focus.
