Diabetes Nurse EducatorLocation: Cairns servicing Cape York communities
Status: Full Time Permanent

The position is therefore only open to Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander applicants.About UsApunipima Cape York Health Council is a community controlled Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander health service, which provides culturally appropriate, family centred, primary health care services to the communities and people of Cape York.About the OpportunityThe Diabetes Nurse Educator will provide comprehensive diabetes education services within a multi-disciplinary team framework, focusing on primary and secondary prevention of diabetes and related illnesses. This position is fly in, fly out from Cairns and will work from Apunipima PHC Centres in Cape York communities on a rotational basis to maximise access of health care for Apunipima clients and encompass both clinical care and preventative health services.Pre-employment screening for vaccination against Vaccine Preventable Diseases will be conducted for the successful applicant.About YouTo be successful in this role you will have:

  • Degree qualification in Nursing with current registration with the Australian Health Practice Registration Authority (AHPRA) as a Registered Nurse Division 1
  • Post graduate qualification in Diabetes Education
  • Credentialled Diabetes Educator with the Australian Diabetes Educators Association (ADEA)
  • Minimum three years’ experience as a credentialled Diabetes Educator.
  • Demonstrated experience in planning, implementing and evaluating health programs and health services, in conjunction with health promotion personnel and other service providers
  • Demonstrated clinical knowledge on all aspects of diabetes and its management
  • Knowledge of legal and professional responsibilities as a Diabetes Nurse Educator including relevant Diabetes Educator standards
  • Understanding of the historical and contemporary issues that impact on Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people and their communities, particularly in Cape York
  • Ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people in accordance with community protocols and customs
