The Royal Hobart Hospital is seeking interest from suitably qualified applicants for the Director – Department of Anaesthesia & Perioperative Medicine.  

Applicants should have experience and skills in leadership and management within the health system.  Further training in leadership and management is an advantage.  Demonstrated highly developed communication skills, the ability to work collaboratively as part of a management team and the understanding of HR and financial planning and management are particularly required.

Royal Hobart Hospital is Tasmania’s largest hospital and major referral centre. As the major clinical teaching and research centre, RHH collaborates with the University of Tasmania and other institutions.  All our services work closely together to focus on delivering excellence in healthcare to achieve improved outcomes for our consumers, our workforce, and the Tasmanian community.

The Department of Anaesthesia and Perioperative Medicine provides a comprehensive range of general and specialist clinical anaesthesia services including trauma, paediatric surgery, cardiothoracic, neurosurgery, vascular and obstetrics specialities. Anaesthesia services are also provided for the Cardiac Catheter Lab, Endoscopy Unit and Medical Imaging Department including Interventional Radiology, CT/MRI and PET scan. We also provide an Acute Pain Service and Perioperative Medicine service.

The Department of Anaesthesia and Perioperative Medicine is a high-quality specialist teaching department with significant research activity.  We participate in multi-centre research trials and encourage local research. We have strong links with University of Tasmania Faculty of Health Science and the Menzies Research centre.

The Role

  • Provide clinical leadership, incorporating principles of best practice to ensure the provision of highest standard of care for patients and meet the agreed goals and targets.
  • Represent the Department of Anaesthesia & Perioperative Medicine within the relevant management forums of the RHH and the Department of Health (DoH).
  • Ensures that the relevant Work Health & Safety practices and standards are implemented and maintained.
  • Ensures the development, implementation and maintenance of performance management systems which support the ongoing development of individual and team performance and skills for medical, nursing and administrative staff.
  • Ensures a system of continuous quality improvement that systematically evaluates and identifies opportunities for improvement and plans to implement strategies to meet patient needs and national and organisational KPIs.
  • Manage the human, material and financial resources for medical, nursing and administrative staff of the Department of Anaesthesia and Perioperative Services.
  • Actively participate in and contribute to the organisation’s Quality & Safety and Work Health & Safety processes, including in the development and implementation of safety systems, improvement initiatives, safeguarding practices for vulnerable people, and related training.
  • The incumbent can expect to be allocated duties, not specifically mentioned in this document, that are within the capacity, qualifications and experience normally expected from persons occupying positions at this classification level.

Salary

Medical Practitioners (Public Sector) Award

A remuneration package comprising the Agreement base salary, relevant allowances and other entitlements will be negotiated with the successful applicant dependent on clinical experience and seniority.

Base salary points range for Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 1 at $210,000 through to Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 11 at $288,000 with further salary increments available.

  • Please note that access to the Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner salary range $291,472 - $301,349 is subject to the successful applicant satisfying the criteria for Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 1, 2 or 3 as outlined in the Medical Practitioners (Tasmanian State Service) Award

In addition, the following allowances calculated on the salaried incremental point are available: 

  • Management allowance
  • Provision of a fully maintained private plated motor vehicle (subject to working full-time hours) OR allowance in lieu of motor vehicle currently set at $27,535 pro rata per annum, paid fortnightly (with CPI indexation on 1 July each year).
  • Continuing Professional Development Allowance of $16,000 pro rata per annum.
  • Relocation allowance.
  • On call allowance
  • All other allowances as per current Award.
  • And subject to approval from the Private Patient Scheme Committee (PPS), 35% of Base salary plus on-call, pro rata) of additional payment will be paid from (PPS). If not admitted to the PPS, a 35% in lieu of PPS of base salary will be paid.

Other Benefits:

  • You will have access to salary package a range of benefits including living expenses up to $9,010 + $2,650 in meal entertainment each FBT year + other benefits if eligible.
  • You will also have access to accommodation and relocation costs.

Details of Appointment

Fixed term, full-time day work (with on-call), working 76 hours per fortnight commencing from 31 September 2024 for 3 years.

  • Specialist or limited registration with the Medical Board of Australia in a relevant specialty
