About This Opportunity 

As a dynamic and strategic research leader, conduct high quality translational research in the area of biotechnology (vaccines and biologics), lead the National Biologics Facility (NBF), facilitate the success of the UQ-CEPI vaccine initiative and partner with State Government to coordinate academic and industry efforts towards delivering the Queensland Biomedical 10-Year Roadmap and Action Plan. The NBF QLD node at AIBN is a founding member of the National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS). For 15+ years NCRIS has played a crucial role in supporting researchers and industrial partners with their advanced biomanufacturing needs from supply of industrially relevant cell lines through to bioprocess development and early-phase clinical manufacture of recombinant proteins.

This is an exciting opportunity for a Professorial Research Fellow to engage in research that sustains their reputation for outstanding research and international leadership in the area. At this level the incumbent will make outstanding contributions in service and engagement roles and activities.

 Key responsibilities will include: 

1. Research

  • Maintain a record of international recognition and leadership in the field, producing quality research outputs by publishing in high quality national and international research journals and other appropriate refereed publications and conference publications.

  • Initiate and lead initiatives and applications as chief investigator for significant research funding to support projects and activities, which includes actively seeking, obtaining and managing research funding.

  • Lead significant and strategic research agendas that yield new insights and opportunities to represent and promote the discipline area in leading academic and research forums.

  • Drive the development of opportunities for the application of knowledge beyond the specific research area to create an environment of cross collaboration between disciplines.

  • Leads and achieve transfer of knowledge, technology and practices to research end users through translation, including commercialisation of UQ Intellectual Property.

  • Hold leadership roles in discipline service, including service on prestigious editorial boards, or other discipline leadership positions, or national and international committees

  • Undertake independent and/or team research that is recognised internationally for its scholarly contribution on policy, practices and/or commercialisation (where relevant).


2. Teaching

  • Where undergraduate and postgraduate teaching is undertaken, achieve teaching quality as indicated by approved surveys and outcomes for students and improve or innovate where appropriate in response to feedback.


3. Supervision and Researcher Development

  • Lead a research team, drive individual/team commitment in the pursuit of results and mentor more junior academics and researchers.

  • Act as Principal Supervisor to Higher Degree by Research students.

  • Demonstrates and leads others in the responsible conduct of research.

  • Demonstrate effectiveness in the development of researcher capability and skill.

  • Facilitate engagement opportunities for supervisees

  • Effectively lead and mentor supervisee performance and conduct by providing feedback, coaching, and professional development.

  • Manage staff effectively throughout the employee lifecycle in accordance with University policy and procedures.

  • Working to promptly resolve conflict and grievances when they arise in accordance with University policy and procedures.


4. Citizenship and Service

  • Consistently demonstrate and provide senior leadership to others in relation to behaviours that align with UQ values.

  • Make outstanding contributions to the improvement and governance of the organisational unit, including seeking and embracing leadership opportunities.

  • Shows leadership of self and others through mentoring, collaboration and a responsibility for staff wellbeing.

  • Sustain a track record of impact, achievement, initiative and innovation regarding internal service to the organisation.

  • Perform a range of administrative functions and processes as required.

  • Establish a track record of collaboration in relation to external service activities.

  • Act as a leader in service and engagement by sustaining and advancing strategic relationships with industry, government departments, professional bodies and the wider community.

This role is subject to The University’s Code of Conduct.  

About You  

  • PhD in life sciences and at least 10 years relevant international experience across both academia and industry.

  • High level expertise and demonstrated track record in research, discovery and development of biologics. A focus on facilitating transition from discovery into pre-clinical and then clinical translation to commercial endpoints is desirable.

  • Executive level experience within the biotechnology industry including demonstrated technical and leadership skills.

  • High level technical expertise in development of vaccine and/or therapeutic molecules in a commercial environment, including strategic project planning and GMP operations.

  • High level experience in management and generation of IP and commercialisation strategy for biotechnology products with a specific expertise in biologics.

  • Thorough understanding and appreciation of the Australian and Queensland biotechnology environment.

  • Demonstrated track record of effective collaboration with internal colleagues as well as external service activities and relationships (i.e., engaging both industry and academic partnerships).

  • Demonstrated high standards of research and ethical integrity.

  • Ability to represent and promote the activities of the AIBN at a University wide community level, including industry, government and professional bodies.

  • Substantial experience in management of people, finances and resources within a large research-based organisation with rapidly evolving research activities.

  • Commitment to upholding the University’s values, and with the outstanding personal qualities of openness, respectfulness and integrity


Desirable

  • International experience in the commercial biotechnology sector.
