Job description

Agency Purpose
The Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) is an independent statutory authority established by the Australian Government to maintain an impartial and independent electoral system for eligible voters through active electoral roll management, efficient delivery of polling services, and targeted education and public awareness programs.
The AEC’s values and commitments
The AEC values and commitments are an essential component of our operating environment and frame how AEC staff work. The AEC's focus is on electoral integrity through the values of quality, agility and professionalism.
The Team
You will join a team of staff across the country that ensures the proper conduct of the election and upholds the Electoral Integrity Framework. You will work across a diverse and dispersed network, working closely with our State Office, National Office and the other states and territories.
The Opportunities
The AEC is seeking a motivated and resilient person with the demonstrated ability to contribute to organisational outcomes and work collaboratively, supporting the Team Leader and working within a small team. A demonstrated commitment to building sustainable relationships with internal and external stakeholders whilst working collaboratively with peers and staff is also required.
The Divisional Project Officer will be responsible for general administrative tasks, project management, team leadership, and delivery of staff training. At the direction of the Team Leader, you will also assist with other duties as required to support the successful delivery of the election.
During the non-election period the focus is firmly on enrolment management, comprehensive election planning and other ongoing projects leading up to the announcement of the election. The Divisional Project Officer will actively train and mentor staff to ensure they are undertaking their work according to legislation, policy, and procedure, whilst also making broader contributions to the review and refinement of internal policies and procedures.
When an election is announced the workload for all divisional staff increases substantially for a period of 8-12 weeks. The Divisional Project Officer is responsible for managing projects during the election, as advised by the Team Leader. Some of these projects may be high risk and large-scale, with pressure to complete work within short and immutable timeframes and may be subject to public and media scrutiny.
To excel you’ll have:

  • Resilience and positivity, with the ability to respond and adapt to changing operational environments, being a self-starter and using initiative.
  • Confidence and the ability to effectively communicate, collaborate and negotiate with team members, business areas and external stakeholders at all levels of seniority.
  • A high level of integrity and motivation with the ability to make evidence-based and effective decisions.
  • A demonstrated ability to work autonomously and a strong commitment to working harmoniously within a team to achieve positive results and support the AEC’s strategic direction.
Eligibility
  • AEC employees must be Australian citizens.
  • Any person who is, and seen to be active in political affairs, and intends to publicly carry on this activity, may compromise the strict neutrality of the AEC and cannot be considered.
  • Applicants are required to consent to, undergo, obtain and maintain a character clearance.
  • Applicants are required to consent to, undergo, obtain and maintain the security clearance required for this role.
