The Role

We have an exciting opportunity for a Dog Care and Welfare Assistant to join our Dog Facilities based in Kew. This is a permanent role, working in a part-time capacity. 

Reporting to the Dog Facilities Lead, you will ensure the physical and temperamental well-being and security of all assigned canines in the Nursery, and Training Kennels.

Responsibilities 

Management of Canine Health

  • Ensure assigned areas and surrounds are maintained in a secure, clean, hygienic and tidy condition at all times, following appropriate procedures.
  • Provide and maintain the highest level of health Care and temperament management of assigned canines.
  •   Ensure assigned canines are regularly health checked, groomed, and bathed as per department procedures.
  • As required, assist the Veterinarian during examinations and provide accurate knowledge and records of canine health problems and related history.
  • Administer medications to canines as directed by the Team Leader and/or Veterinarian.
  • Transport canines for veterinary examinations or treatment as directed by the team leader and/or Veterinarian.

Management of Canine Temperament

  • Ensure assigned canines are quiet and relaxed, and promote a positive, calm Training Kennel/Nursery environment.
  • Implement correct handling techniques and handle canines in a positive, quiet and appropriate manner.​​​

Qualifications

  • A minimum of 2 years of experience in Canine Husbandry and/or completion of Certificate IV in Animal Studies.

Knowledge, Skills & Previous Experience

  • Good canine handling skills and ability to demonstrate effective leadership and control over canines.
  • Comfortable and confident around canines.
  • Good communication, interpersonal skills, with a mature and professional approach and presentation.
  • Excellent time management skills, organisational skills, and a good eye for detail.
  • Ability to work well within a team, as well as independently, assuming responsibility for nominated tasks.
  • Ability to work under direction following procedures and systems of work, while maintaining initiative, and the ability to follow through with all tasks.
  • Ability to be flexible, adapt to varying workloads.
  • Ability to demonstrate commitment and dedication to department and organisational goals and objectives.
  • Ability to maintain appropriate and accurate records.
  •    Competent computer literacy skills, with the ability to learn and use new programs.
