The Opportunity

The Y Northern Territory has several Duty Manager positions available across the Darwin Waterfront, Parap and Nightcliff Pools and the soon to be opened Casuarina Aquatics and Leisure Centre.  As a Duty Manager you will have delegated authority of the Centre Manager. As well as identifying potential risk factors and taking steps to reduce those risks, Duty Managers will act as positive role models and show leadership qualities to the team at the Centre. 

Duty Managers will maintain a broad knowledge of centre programs and services whilst at the same time managing the following functions whilst on shift; customer service, kiosk, safety, staff rosters and breaks, plant operations, customer education and general maintenance and cleaning. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the day-to-day supervision of the Aquatic Centre’s programs, staff, customers and facilities.
  • Provide leadership and guidance to staff in a supportive and professional manner.
  • Understand and adhere to all Y Northern Territory Workplace Health and Safety policies and procedures to help improve safety for customers and staff.
  • Effectively monitor operational staff and ensure adequate supervision is provided to allow these staff to carry out their delegated responsibilities safely and competently.
  • Able to work alongside and support other members of the team.
  • Attend all mandatory meetings and trainings, actively participating in these sessions.
  • Maintain a safe recreational environment by ensuring patrolling of all pools or pool areas, directing customers to ensure correct and safe usage in the facility, undertaking constant visible monitoring, making informed assessments of situations, providing lifeguard procedures and first aid, resuscitation, and emergency life support as required.
  • Commitment to customer service excellence by handling customer queries, feedback and complaints in a professional and timely manner.
  • Act as Chief Warden during emergency evacuations including the responsibility of directing all staff and cleaning facilities of patrons.
  • Exercise due care, skill and judgement and act at all times in accord with applicable professional ethics, principles, legislation and standards.
  • Provide information and advice on all programs and services, and safe pool practices to the public as required.
  • Complete daily spot checks of the Centre’s cleanliness, and where necessary assist in spot cleaning areas on a need’s basis.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Demonstrated experience in the successful operational supervision of an Aquatic centre. 
  • Previous experience as a Lifeguard in an aquatic environment.
  • Sound knowledge of equipment used and the operating procedures. 
  • An understanding of aquatic hazards and the risks associated with them.
  • Well-developed communication and time management skills and the ability maintain rapport with persons from all levels within the organisation.
  • Proficiency in using business software and technology.
  • Regular participation in and a commitment to professional development.
  • Current NT driver’s license.
  • Pool Lifeguard Certificate.
  • Pool Plant Operations Certificate or a willingness to obtain.

Mandatory Requirements

  • Valid Working with Children Clearance.
  • Satisfactory Criminal History Check.
  • Valid right to work in Australia.
  • Ability to swim 200m of recognisable stroke in under 6 minutes.
  • Able to tow a person with a rescue aid for 25 metres.
  • Current First Aid and CPR qualifications (HLTAID003 or higher). 
  • Current Pool Lifeguard Certificate.
  • Fire Warden Certificate
