About the Role
This is an exciting opportunity for a student or recent graduate of Journalism at the University to work for up to one year in our Journalism newsroom as an Editorial Assistant, made possible by the May and Romeo Schiavon Journalism Fund.As an Editorial Assistant, you will play a vital role in producing online publications for the Centre for Advancing Journalism (CAJ), including The Citizen, The Global Citizen, and The Junction, among others as directed. You will also compile and publish The Advancer, the Centre's monthly newsletter, and manage social media updates for CAJ events when needed.Collaborating with the School's Events and Engagement Officer, you will support the organisation and delivery of events and activities related to the publications you work on.Your responsibilities will include:
  • Compile and publish The Advancer (CAJ newsletter) on a monthly basis.
  • Assist where required on other publications, including The Citizen, The Junction, and The Global Citizen.
  • Working with the Marketing and Communications team, develop publicity material for CAJ publications, maintain the CAJ website, and assist with operating CAJ social media channels.
  • Working with the Events and Engagement Officer, support the organisation and delivery of CAJ events.
  • Undertake general administrative duties as required to support the operations of the CAJ newsroom.

  • Completion (or approaching completion) of a Journalism program at the University of Melbourne within the last 5 years.
  • Strong literacy in computer and social media and digital apps and platforms.
  • Strong writing and editing skills, with exceptional attention to detail and a commitment to inclusivity in all aspects of their work.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work independently and as a member of a team, and to maintain professional working relationships at all levels of the organisation.
  • Excellent organisational skills with the ability to manage one's own time effectively, administer multiple tasks simultaneously and meet deadlines successfully.
