Appointment Pool

Shelley Primary School is seeking to establish a pool of Special NeedsEducation Assistants for appointments to permanent and fixed term, full-time and part-time vacancies which may arise during the 2024 school year and up to the end of Term 2, 2025. Appointments can be made from the pool at any time for commencements within the 2024 school year, up to the end of Term 2, 2025.

Suitable applicants should have excellent interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to collaborate well with the teacher to create and maintain a supportive, inclusive education program to meet the specific needs of the students. An understanding and regular use of safe work practices will be highly regarded. We are seeking applicants who have experience working with students with severe medical conditions and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

You should be organised and able to use your initiative to assist the teacher with the general care and wellbeing of students and maintenance of the learning environment. You will ideally work either under general supervision or autonomously and contribute advice and expertise, collaborating with school community members to support student achievement.

We are seeking applicants who are ideally committed to enhancing students’ learning opportunities using their understanding of differentiation, intervention, and engagement strategies to assist students in accessing the curriculum.

As an Education Assistant - Special Needs you will ideally, under limited supervision and guidance from the Learning Support Team, perform tasks that require discretion and judgement to assist students in achieving their full potential. We strive for an inclusive school environment that caters for students with a diverse range of support needs both academically and socially.

Education Assistants are timetabled to support students and classes across a wide range of curriculum areas and departments within the school. Suitable applicants should therefore possess a high level of interpersonal skills, including the ability to collaborate with teachers to scaffold the curriculum and provide feedback on Teaching & Learning Adjustments.

It is important that suitable applicants have a positive attitude and the ability to anticipate and adapt to change, showing initiative and flexibility to produce the best opportunities for students.

To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements (selection criteria):

  • Good written and oral communication skills, including the ability to interact with students with Special Needs, parents and teaching professionals on the provision of educational programs, and to assist teachers in understanding students where necessary.
  • Good interpersonal skills, including the ability to work as part of a team in the evaluation of educational programs, including special education and therapy programs where these have been implemented.
  • Good organisational skills that will assist in the delivery and development of effective education programs to students and subsequent feedback to teaching professionals or psychologists.
  • Ability to assist teachers or therapists in implementing educational programs, including special education and, should this be a requirement of the position, occupational and/or physiotherapy programs.
  • Knowledge of health and physical disabilities in students and adolescents.
  • Ability to assist with general health and well-being of students.

Eligibility and training requirements

Employees will be required to:

  • provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy;
  • consent to a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check and obtain a current Screening Clearance Number issued by the Department of Education’s Screening Unit prior to commencement of employment;
  • obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check;
  • complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
  • complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment and every three years thereafter;
  • complete the Department’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural awareness online course within 3 months of commencement;
  • complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy.

Education Assistants working with Kindergarten students may be required to have, or be actively working towards, a Certificate lll in Education Support (or approved equivalent) in order to meet the educator-to-student ratio outlined in the National Quality Standard for Early Childhood Education and Care.

Approved equivalent qualifications are published by the Australian Children’s Education and Care Quality Authority.

The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
