Job description

Part time, flexible role for 24-30 hours per week

Who we are
The MJD Foundation partners with and supports Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander families living with Machado Joseph Disease (MJD) and Spinocerebellar Ataxia Type 7 (SCA7) to live fulfilling and rewarding lives. The MJDF is an Aboriginal organisation and we take our core values from combining best practice western and traditional cultural knowledge in the ‘Our-way’ approach. By providing flexible and culturally responsive care based on a strong foundation of enduring relationships, we aim to provide families living with MJD specialist care and support, working together to stay stronger for longer. We are recruiting for a part time Education Lead, for 24-30 hours/week. Hours can be filled in flexibly and hybrid working arrangements (partly from home) are also an option.

The Position

The Education Lead is responsible for education and training in the following two main areas:

  1. The development and delivery of educational materials and training about the management of Machado-Joseph disease, SCA7 and associated health and disability issues. 
  2. Development of internal training resources and assistance to facilitate the community services and clinical teams to provide best practice care and fulfill NDIS Practice Standards.

You have strong interpersonal skills, are very organised and understand what it means to work ‘Our Way’: together. Your communication skills and IT skills are very strong and you are able to work towards deadlines.

Special Requirements

  • Willingness to travel to remote communities (by light aircraft or 4WD).
  • Ability to obtain and maintain NDIS Worker Screening clearance.
  • Willingness to adhere to Government vaccination policies and provide proof of compliance.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain an NT class C manual drivers’ license.

Selection Criteria:

  1. Relevant tertiary qualifications (for example in Education, Science, Communication or Heath) with subsequent relevant experience in community/disability/health services, or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education and training.
  2. Project management skills, with the ability to plan, implement and report on a diverse range of activities in an environment requiring performance of multiple tasks and adherence to deadlines.
  3. Knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and their communities and cultures from an historical and contemporary perspective.
  4. Capability to establish, maintain and work in effective collaborative partnerships to facilitate high quality educational experiences for adult learners.
  5. Highly developed inclusivity and accessibility approaches; cross-cultural awareness including an understanding of the needs of diverse audiences, and ability to incorporate multiple perspectives into educational material.
  6. A commitment to person and family centered practice and working within the MJD Foundation ‘Our Way’ approach.
  7. High level oral and written communication skills including public speaking and presentation skills together with the ability to develop and implement public education and awareness campaigns.
  8. Demonstrated experience and competency with a range of computer software, digital education resources including Microsoft Suite and educational systems (LMS).
  9. A self-starter, with proven ability to manage relationships and initiate change.

Desirable criteria:

  1. Understanding of the mechanisms and processes of Spinocerebellar ataxia.
  2. Clinical experience in neurological and/or rehabilitation settings
  3. Lived experience in remote Aboriginal community settings.
  4. Knowledge of the NDIS.
  5. Working knowledge of NT and QLD Government and/or NGO services and facilities.
