The Department of Parliamentary Services provides support to all Members of Parliament for the recruitment and selection of their staff. On behalf of the Member for Bendigo East, we are now recruiting for two Electorate Officer positions.
Electorate Officer (Grade 2) - two positions available
Member for Bendigo East About the Role
Electorate Officers play an important role in providing services to the Victorian community. Reporting to the Member of Parliament that nominates you, your work will require a high degree of trust and integrity. Confidentiality is also a key requirement when interacting with constituents and visitors to the office or in the community.
Based in the Member of Parliament's electorate office, you will interact daily with constituents, community organisations and other stakeholders. Key responsibilities for both roles may include:
General administration and office management
Constituent services
Media and stakeholder engagement
Under Section 30 of the Parliamentary Administration Act 2005 Electorate Officers must not perform any party specific activities. Party specific activity means any activity for the dominant purpose of directing how a person should vote at an election, by promoting or opposing the election of any candidate at the election; or a registered political party; or an elected member. Salary and Job Type
We are recruiting for two Electorate Officer positions within the Bendigo East electorate office. One position will be fixed-term, full-time until end of November 2024, while the other position is ongoing, part-time. Both positions will be subject to a six month probationary period.
Electorate Officer salaries are set out in the Electorate Officers (Victoria) Single Enterprise Agreement 2021.
Both roles will be classed as Grade 2, which carries a salary of $81,832 per annum (pro-rata for the part-time position) plus 11% employer superannuation. About you
Key attributes of responsiveness, effectiveness and accountability are precisely the values and behaviours the successful applicants will need to succeed.
The role of an Electorate Officer requires you to demonstrate:
Initiative and organisational ability, particularly working autonomously to determine priorities and perform a broad range of office support duties, often to tight and demanding deadlines.
Sound written and oral communication skills with a proven ability to undertake research and prepare written materials including reports, submissions, and correspondence.
Excellent computer skills with experience in MS suite of software and use and maintenance of online communications.
Commitment and ability to provide the highest level of client service in a challenging environment, providing sound advice and maintaining the strictest confidence on all issues.
Strong knowledge of, and ability to provide advice and guidance on, government and parliamentary processes.
Strong knowledge of traditional and social media landscape with ability to maintain relationships with journalists and media outlets; and provide advice in a rapidly changing external policy and political environment.
Ability to collaborate with a diverse range of stakeholders from government and peak organisations to local community organisations and constituents.
Ability to evaluate work procedures, practices, and systems and to implement change.
Sound coaching and mentoring skills with ability to support other staff in a team environment, provide direction where required and respect the needs of others.
Behaviours consistent with Electorate Officer values and Code of Conduct, including the ability to display high levels of responsiveness, integrity, impartiality, accountability, and respect in relationships with others and decision making.
For more information about the roles, please see the attached position description. Pre-Employment Screening requirements
All appointments are subject to receipt of a satisfactory National Name (Police) Check and Working with Children Check. Successful candidates who do not currently hold a Working with Children Check will be required to obtain a check within 3 months of commencement of employment.
As part of the selection process, you may be asked to complete an online competency or skills assessment. How to apply
Using the "Apply Now" button, please include your resume and a brief cover letter broadly outlining your experience and how it directly relates to the position. In your resume and cover letter, please indicate which position you are applying for.
You are not required to provide a response to each individual key selection criteria. Accessibility
If you require assistance or adjustments to fully participate in the application or interview process for this role, please contact Parliament's Recruitment Team via email recruitment@parliament.vic.gov.au or on (03) 03 8682 2842.
While Members of Parliament are prohibited from determining that an Electorate Officer can or must perform work that is party specific, Members typically nominate Electorate Officer whose political beliefs are closely aligned with their own. Section 27 of the Equal Opportunity Act 2010 states that an employer may discriminate on the basis of political belief or activity in the offering of employment to an Electorate Officer.
The Department of Parliamentary Services supports all Members of Parliament in the recruitment and selection process of Electorate Officers. You will receive communications throughout the process from the Department.
