Embedded Software Engineer – Automotive Product Manufacturer

About You

Tertiary qualified with a Bachelor of Electronic Engineering or equivalent, and with a proven track record, you will possess a practical and pragmatic mindset.  You will be a hands-on engineer who can review and improve existing products as well as develop innovative new products and technologies using your commercial / market orientation.  You will be looking to advance your career with a market leader.

About the Role

You will be part of a team of Engineers responsible for the design, installation and maintenance of electronic instruments.

Reporting to the Engineering Manager, this important role will design and develop new products, components, manufacturing systems and engineering support measures for our range of workshop Equipment. The role will both lead and support new product development projects and drive new product innovation in order to deliver real business growth and ongoing market leadership. Working closely with a range of key internal stakeholders including marketing and production engineers, this role will be responsible for developing some of the highest priority new product initiatives. Critical to your success in this role will be your ability to use your design skills and stakeholder management to deliver a range of projects on time and on budget.


Key operational Requirements and responsibilities

  • Demonstrate a mature approach to design with due consideration to requirements relating to marketing needs, the needs of the customers, human factors/useability, environmental factors and design for manufacturing and assembly
  • Operate with a high level of autonomy whilst interacting effectively with, and seeking input from team members and other areas of the business
  • Develop commercial grade firmware to maximise product performance and reliability. 
    • deliver high-quality embedded C code within tight deadlines
    • profile, test and debug new embedded functionality
    • produce clear and concise documentation
    • dive in and take ownership of critical design tasks
    • actively participate in code reviews
  • Firmware support through full product life-cycle 
  • Testing, verification and validation of designed products to ensure they meet the necessary requirements and specifications under anticipated usage scenarios and operating conditions
    • Debugging and troubleshooting existing products
  • Collaborate with the hardware, software and production teams to: 
    • Identify opportunities for product and system level enhancements.
    • Explore technical feasibility for future products, design optimizations and features.

To be successful in this role you will have extensive experience in the firmware development process, and be able to demonstrate the following skills

  • Excellent Communication
  • Degree qualified in computer science, software / electronics engineering or a related technology qualification
  • Strong understanding on the operation of microprocessor hardware (ARM core, interrupts, DMA, clocks, power saving, SPI, I2C)
  • Fluent in C for embedded systems (3+ years).
  • Experience of communications/protocols – CAN, TCP/IP, HTTP, WIFI as well as hardware interfacing.
  • Complete understanding of the operation of software tool chain (IDE, compiler, linker, makefile)
  • Regression testing and code release processes.
  • Strong debugging and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to read schematics, datasheets and use electronic test equipment.
  • Experience in Software Engineering, embedded system engineering, release engineering, and/or configuration management.
  • IoT experience 
  • Familiarity with software configuration management systems and/or source code version control systems.
  • Analytical mind with problem-solving aptitude
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to consistently work to a high standard with minimal supervision; self-motivated
  • Hold a valid Australian Driver’s License and Permanent Australian Residency
