To be eligible for this position you must be PGY 3 + from February 2025

The combined Emergency and Obstetric and Gynaecology SRMO job has been designed for doctors wanting to gain more experience across both Emergency and O&G before embarking on a career in general practice, ACCRM, or deciding to enter into Emergency or O&G as a speciality.  There will be the opportunity to complete the RANZCOG women’s health certificate if desired. Successful applicants will spend 6 months rotating through the Emergency department and 6 months rotating through O&G.

O&G Experience:

The Centenary Hospital for Women and Children is the level 6 tertiary referral centre for the ACT and surrounding region with over 3700 births. It has a busy Neonatal Intensive Care Unit with a regional role extending throughout southern NSW and over 200 level 3 admissions each year.

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology recognises the importance of work life balance and choice related to family planning. We are supportive of part time applicants and Maternity Leave.

This is a service role and duties will be in the area of inpatient ward work, outpatient clinics, early pregnancy care, acute Obstetrics and emergency gynaecology. There will also be exposure to elective obstetric and Gynaecology surgery. There will be significant scope to develop specific O&G related skills, such as ultrasound, suturing, and intrapartum procedures. There is also opportunity to develop skills in Caesarean section under supervision. This unit is supportive of the RANZCOG certificate of Women’s health and you are encouraged to complete this in your time with us.

We are a large medical team of 40 FACEMs, a postgraduate fellow, 3 Senior Registrars, 30 registrars, and multiple other junior medical staff. 
It is a very exciting time for Canberra Hospital Emergency Department (ED), with a modern, expanded physical space consisting of a 5-bed resuscitation area, 30 acute beds, 16 short stay beds, fast track stream with a sub-wait and 14 treatment spaces and a dedicated paediatric area with 6 beds and 2 consult rooms.  The coming years include the building of “Canberra Hospital Expansion” – new build for critical care services with a state of the art 114 bed Emergency Department.
We are one of the busiest EDs in the country:
•           We are seeing over 89,000 presentations per annum.
•           We have approximately 20% paediatric presentations.
•           We have high acuity with admission rates of more than 35%.
•           We have a significant trauma caseload.

The department places a strong focus on teaching and successful candidates are encouraged to participate in the certificate of Emergency Medicine through the Australasian College for Emergency medicine during this appointment, or join the College to embark on Emergency training. The staff are a friendly group of people, making the Emergency Department a great team to join. This is an ideal position to gain expertise in both paediatric and adult emergencies. It is suited to applicants wishing to consolidate skills prior to commencing emergency medicine training or to those looking to further their expertise before embarking on a career in General Practice, or Rural Medicine. Residents have also undertaken the Diploma of Paediatrics during this year.  

The Emergency Department at Canberra Hospital offers a unique, wide-ranging and exciting experience rarely available in a single hospital.

DUTIES

Under limited direction of the Medical Director you will provide day-to-day medical care for patients of the CHS at a level commensurate with the level of clinical experience and under the supervision and direction of more senior medical staff.

You will:

1. Provide assessment and management of patients under the supervision and direction of more senior medical staff appropriate to level of clinical experience.

1. Perform Clinical duties including care of patients in the Birthing Suite, Inpatient Units, Theatre, Outpatient clinics, Early Pregnancy Unit and Maternity Assessment Unit.

1. Perform specialised procedures on the direction and under supervision of the duty specialist (ED)

1. Participate in rostered education sessions, teaching of medical student and junior doctors and prepare material for clinical presentations, audit and mortality/morbidity reviews as directed. 

1. Participate in rostered duties as allocated (24/7).

1. Comply with the policies and requirements of the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency and policies of the CHS. This includes the promotion and application of workplace relations, workplace equity and diversity and workplace safety.

7.      Demonstrate appropriate progression toward more independent medical practice, with concomitant development of clinical knowledge, skills and behaviours required for safe medical practice.

8.      Work within and support the multidisciplinary clinical team.

9.      Maintain adequate medical records with legible entries, and complete discharge summaries on time.

10.   Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.

Position Requirements / Qualifications

Mandatory

• An Australian MBBS medical degree, or equivalent

·         Current Basic Life Support and Advance Life Support certification

·         Be registered or be eligible for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).

·          The successful applicant will need to be available for weekend and after-hours work.

• CHS is leading the drive to digitally transform health service delivery in Australia through the implementation of a territory wide Digital Health Record. Computer literacy skills are required which are relevant to this role as you will be responsible for completing required documentation and becoming a proficient user of the Digital Health Record and/or other Information Technology systems; once proficient, you will need to remain current with changes, updates and contingencies.
