Role Summary

The Future Energy – Lead Power Systems Electrical Engineer is a newly created opportunity based at our Perth CBD office and which will be pivotal for delivering Synergy’s large-scale renewable energy generation and storage assets.

Reporting to the Future Energy Engineering Manager you would play a critical role in leading and shaping the development and implementation of engineering standards and strategies permitting the optimal and compliant integration of large-scale renewable energy generation and storage assets to the power network. In your role, would also perform and/or manage advance power system modelling activities, support Synergy meeting all market and network regulation requirements, while championing the safe and on-time delivery of projects.

As a Lead Engineer you would be able to bring your technical expertise (across substation primary equipment, generation performance monitoring, protection systems design and commissioning, etc.) and soft and leadership skills to the fore, while collaborating across a multidisciplinary Team, to advance Synergy’s strategic goals and zero carbon emission objectives.

Key Responsibilities Of The Role(s) Include

  • Develop and implement strategies for power systems integration and commissioning across large scale wind and PV power generation, energy storage systems and DER projects.
  • Lead the creation and management of detailed engineering standards and knowledge base considering the various Electrical systems components of Synergy’s renewable energy facilities.
  • Lead and manage the life cycle of renewable energy facilities power system models to support the management of change process for protection systems and the completion of generator performance testing and reporting.
  • Collaborate with grid and market operators and cross-functional teams to seamlessly integrate renewable energy facilities into the power network – South-West Interconnected System (SWIS).
  • Serve as the primary SME for network connection processes, technical rules, and regulations governing the connection of new renewable and DER assets to the power grid.
  • Conduct thorough analysis of power system disturbances, alarms and other records to identify root causes and device and implement effective solutions to enhance power system resilience and the availability of Synergy’s assets.
What You’ll Bring
  • Tertiary qualification in Electrical Engineering or related field.
  • A combined minimum of 7+ years proven experience across all or some of the following areas:
    • Scoping, design, and commissioning activities for substations or power generation high and low voltage primary equipment and systems.
    • Protection systems design and commissioning activities for power generation and energy storage facilities.
    • Understanding of generator performance requirements.
    • Reliability engineering activities for large transmission connected generating facilities and/or HV distribution networks.
    • Experience performing or managing static and dynamic modelling of large generating stations, networks and/or loads using DigSilent PowerFactory or PSCAD software tools.
  • Experience in developing and implementing internal engineering standards.
  • Strong understanding of power system operations and familiarity with Western Power’s Technical Rules and WEM regulations with regards to the connection process.
  • A current member of Engineers Australia to the level of Engineer or higher.
