Castlereagh Coal (CCoal) is an Australian owned family business, operating Invincible and Cullen Valley mines. The operations are located in the Lithgow region, NSW. Our values are Respect, Responsibility and Resilience – values that have underpinned our safe production.

Invincible and Cullen Valley mines are open cut operations, with a future to establish an underground operation. Our high-quality coal product is in high demand from local energy producers. We have brought these operations back into operation after over 8 years in care and maintenance. We will strive towards completion of the operations and rehabilitation of the surrounding land.

About the role

Reporting to the General Manager, the Environmental Manager role is responsible for the application, execution, review, and continual improvement of the CCoal’s Environmental Management System (EMS). The role will ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and environmental obligations (internal and external), whilst promoting sustainable environmental management with daily operational activities. The role will also cover the various titles under CCoal’s jurisdiction.

Key responsibilities/ result areas in this role include:

  • Ensuring compliance with our environmental obligations, including Environment Protection Licences, Development Consents, site management plans and procedures
  • Timely development and delivery of tenement annual reports, annual returns, and environmental annual reviews
  • Co-ordinating of, and attendance at, Community Consultative Committee
  • Liaising and working with key site personnel on operational stewardship
  • Managing and contributing environmental data for budgeting purposes
  • Managing environmental consultants and subcontractors
  • Promoting the company's reputation and relationship with government regulators, local landholders, and stakeholders through positive consultation and proactive engagement.
  • Assisting with approvals, permits, and feasibility studies as required.
  • Acting as the designated point of contact for the department, providing support on managing environmental risks and compliance with obligations.
  • Attending meetings as required to facilitate duties.
  • Providing emergency response for injured fauna, spills, or other environmental incidents.
  • Proactively identifying and addressing hazards, leading the team in recognizing at-risk activities and involving specialized expertise for requisite controls, encompassing safety, environmental, and operational considerations.

About you

The ideal candidate for this position must have a degree in Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, Natural Resource Management, or a related scientific qualification. You must demonstrate recognized expertise in water management, waste management, incident investigation, and environmental management with a focus on regulatory compliance. Experience in a mine site environmental role is required, along with practical experience in mining, construction, or engineering environments. You should have a deep understanding of environmental approvals requirements, particularly within the NSW and Commonwealth regulatory frameworks.

The successful candidate should have a proven track record in establishing, implementing, and managing Environmental Management Systems (EMS) and frameworks. Leadership qualities are essential, including demonstrated experience in managing people and departmental budgets. You will exhibit proficiency in mine rehabilitation and possess the ability to inspire teams, promote collaboration, and display leadership presence. Strong communication skills, both written and oral, are crucial, with a high level of proficiency in report writing and the capacity to make group presentations. It is important to have competencies in the Microsoft suite (eg Word, Teams, Excel), as well as data management and software proficiency. Excellent stakeholder engagement, relationship-building skills, analytical skills, and knowledge of local ecosystems are highly desirable attributes for this role. The candidate should be adept at knowledge sharing, interacting with all levels of the organization, and engaging with key stakeholders, both internal and external.
