Job description

Copper Mines of Tasmania (CMT), a subsidiary of Vedanta Resources, owns and operates the historic Mount Lyell Mine at Queenstown.

CMT requires a full time Environmental Superintendent to support Vedanta's Australian operation in Queenstown, Tasmania. 

Reporting to the Environmental Manager the Environmental Superintendent supports the management of the site’s environmental statutory obligations and objectives and contributes to the company’s sustainability. The role is responsible for implementing CMT’s environmental monitoring and inspection programs and the delivery of awareness raising and training to site personnel and the broader community. The position provides backup to the Environmental Manager with opportunities for advancement under the department’s succession plan.

Working a 5:2 roster this is a residential role and the successful candidate will be provided with suitable company housing, vehicle and a relocation package.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Develop and implement rehabilitation and land management procedures.
  • Manage environmental contractors, operational personnel and consultants to ensure continuous compliance to licenses and approvals relevant to sustainable operations.
  • Collate, interpret and report environmental data including maintaining registers for waste and hydrocarbon usage
  • Develop and deliver awareness and training programs.
  • Support the Environment Manager and provide inputs into the day to day management of site environmental statutory obligations.
  • Represent the company in industry advisory and community committees where required.
  • Must comply with safe work practices and have a high level awareness of issues concerning the environment.

Qualifications, experience and attributes should include, but not limited to:

  • Relevant tertiary qualification in an environmental, scientific, geological or related discipline. 
  • At least 5 years experience in a mining operations role
  • A sound knowledge of environmental legislation, policies and practices.
  • Experience in training and auditing, with strong influencing abilities. 
  • Experience with ISO, NGERS and NPI reporting. 
  • Competency in database management and reporting of environmental data.
  • Excellent interpretation, analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Work organisation skills to ensure meeting deadlines and work unsupervised
  • Strong written, verbal and information management skills.

The preferred applicant would have at least 5 years’ experience in the mining industry and must be an Australian citizen or an Australian resident. The position offers a remuneration package and benefits in line with current mining industry levels. This is a residential role.
