The Department of Water and Environmental Regulation is the primary water and environmental regulator in Western Australia. It is headquartered in Joondalup and employs approximately 1200 staff across the state. The department’s vision is to create a low-carbon Western Australia with a healthy environment and secure resources for future generations.
The department is embarking on a major multi-year reform agenda that has been informed by Government’s key strategic priorities and the findings of the Agency Capability Review. This agenda focuses on several key areas:

The newly created Approvals Portfolio leads the provision of regulatory services across the Department and is tasked with the delivery of a world class approvals system that is customer and outcomes focused, risk-based, digital and efficient.

The Opportunity
The Approvals Portfolio provides confidence to all Western Australians, including First Nations Australians, that the state’s water and environmental resources are being protected and sustained into the future through transparent, integrated and inclusive impact assessment and assurance practices underpinned by the best available science and policies.
The Executive Director Assurance is a key leadership role in the Approvals Portfolio. It partners with the Deputy Director General Approvals in providing certainty to government that environmental regulatory approvals system is achieving its intended outcomes. The role leads the provision of state-wide integrated risk-based compliance, enforcement, monitoring, and evaluation programs across legislation administered by the Department, supported by robust environmental science, to delivery best practice assurance processes and outcomes.
As a key member of the Senior Leadership team, the role is accountable for providing expert direction and advice across specialised compliance and enforcement functions, pollution incident management and intelligence gathering, and the Department’s air quality, environmental noise, and contaminated sites functions.
