The Organisation
The Department of Water and Environmental Regulation is the primary water resource manager and environmental regulator in Western Australia. It is headquartered in Joondalup and employs approximately 1200 staff across the state. The department’s vision is to create a low-carbon Western Australia with a healthy environment and secure water resources for future generations.
During a period of significant economic and environmental transformation, the department’s strategic priority is to strengthen the government’s commitments on climate action. This includes transitioning to a net zero economy while maintaining a healthy environment, and ensuring secure water resources for future generations.
The department’s multi-year reform agenda has been informed by Government’s key strategic priorities, and the findings of the drawn on experience and stakeholder input.
This agenda focuses on several key areas:

  • A low waste economy

The department’s transformational programs in financial, digital and people management will also build organisational capability to keep pace with providing highest quality services to people both within and outside the department.
The strategic plan and associated reform agenda are being enabled by a new portfolio operating model focused on Climate and Sustainability, Strategy and Performance and Approvals. The three Deputy Director Generals are responsible for leading the portfolios, and together with the Director General, oversee the strategy and leadership of the department, forming the Corporate Executive.

The Opportunity
The Executive Director Water partners with the Deputy Director General Climate and Sustainability in leading the Department’s long term, integrated vision and strategy for a sustainable water future.
As a member of the Senior Leadership Team, the role is accountable for delivering the directorate’s vision to safeguard the sustainability and climate resilience of Western Australia’s water to enhance the wellbeing of communities and ecosystems through evidence-based stewardship and innovation. The role provides guidance to decision makers and sets parameters for long term policy setting.
Core leadership behaviours outlined in Leadership Expectations are applicable to this role and should be demonstrated in the context of . Leadership in this context is about shaping complex initiatives covering multiple business areas as well as having a key responsibility in corporate governance.
To be successful in the role, you will need to demonstrate:
