APG Workforce are currently seeking an Experimental Assistant for a government assignment based in Mareeba, QLD.
The Role:
- Assignment till 7/4/2028 with possibility of extension
- Ordinary hours are 72.5 Hours Fortnightly, Monday to Friday – between 6am to 6pm – up to 9.5 hours daily.
- $37.47 + Super + OT
The Experimental Assistant role is based in Mareeba and will work as part of the North Queensland Sown Pastures team within the Animal Science unit to undertake field activities in support of the Queensland Pasture Resilience Program.
Role Expectations and Requirements:
Working within Agri-Science Queensland, the successful candidate will be part of the Northern Pasture Team that provides support to the Extensive Livestock Systems, Animal Science.
As part of this opportunity, the successful candidate will be required to perform the following:
- Preparing seed for sowing, plant propagation, crop maintenance, harvesting and processing to produce high quality seed of pasture grasses and legumes.
- Field trial preparation and maintenance, including fencing and weed control.
- Assist in the collection of field data and images to support pasture seed crop production and plant evaluation activities.
- Complete research activities on DAF research properties and commercial grazing properties, including travel to remote areas.
- Prior experience in the operation and maintenance of agricultural machinery, mowers, hand tools, seed cleaning and spraying equipment.
- Officially recognised competency in the application of agrichemicals in Australia an advantage.
- Experience working within cropping or beef grazing businesses in north Queensland, including animal handling.
- Knowledge of, and preferably experience in, the practical management of agricultural crops and pastures.
- Capacity to complete simple data field recording and data entry using simple spreadsheets.
- Qualifications (or ability to attain) to support the application of agrochemicals.
- Skills to safely and effectively operate basic machinery to perform routine and standard functions and organise duties across a working day to meet regular workload requirements.
- Ability to undertake travel, including extended trips across north Queensland and often in remote areas.
- Willingness to undertake work (including at times physically demanding work) in a field environment for extended periods at all times of the year.
- A current ‘C’ class driver licence.
- Vaccination or provision of evidence of prior immunity to Q-Fever is required prior to commencement.
- The position would ideally suit a local resident in the Mareeba/Walkamin area due to the limited availability of accommodation in this regional locality.
- The Department will not be liable for any costs associated with the relocation or housing of a candidate to the Mareeba/Walkamin area.
- The candidate will supply their own enclosed footwear and protective clothing in accordance with Workplace Health and Safety Requirements.
