Job description

The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS) is involved in the development and delivery of a diverse range of offerings including traditional award courses, as well as ‘new business’ offerings of fully online postgraduate courses with an Educational partner, short courses and microcredentials. 

FASS is calling for Expressions of Interest from suitably qualified applicants for inclusion on an eligibility list for casual academic positions related to 

  • undergraduate and postgraduate courses in the School of Communication and School of International Studies and Education;
  • short courses & microcredentials across the faculty;
  • curriculum development and teaching opportunities in the areas of
    • International Relations,
    • Language & Culture, in particular Japanese and French,
    • Human Centred skills (e.g. Resilience, navigating conflict, decision making).


We are seeking applications from industry professionals as well as the next generation of academics seeking experience in an academic teaching role.

The Faculty recognises and values the diversity of teaching and learning practices that the employment of Casual Academics offers our students and, as a casual academic, you would make an important contribution to learning and teaching in the faculty.

Casual academics may be engaged in activities such as curriculum development, preparation of educational materials (including video lectures), tutoring, integrated learning and practical activities, marking, student consultations and other administrative tasks. This may include online delivery of material and the facilitation of student learning via online activities. Such activities will take place in UTS Online (Canvas) and, at times, over an accelerated calendar of 8 weeks.

Teaching and Learning in FASS is aligned with Learning Futures and the UTS Model of Learning.

RECRUITMENT PROCESS

Applicants are encouraged to provide: 

  • Evidence of effectiveness in teaching (e.g. summary of student feedback results, observation reports, etc.); 
  • Summary of relevant pedagogical professional development or training;
  • List of relevant technologies and platforms (and degree of proficiency in use) used in teaching;
  • CV and Cover Letter.


The Faculty will undertake an assessment of each applicant’s experience, skills and qualifications based on all the documents provided. The selection process may include an interview and details of at least two referees should be provided. All the applicants will be informed of the outcome of their application.

Successful applicants will be placed on the FASS Casual Academic Eligibility List and may be selected for appointment based on the availability of work in their areas of expertise and the applicant’s capacity to perform the duties of the position.

Successful applicants to the FASS Casual Academic Staff Eligibility list may be selected to contribute to the teaching programs of the Faculty within one or both of the Faculty’s two Schools in their discipline and program area of specialism.

Successful and selected applicants will be provided with orientation, induction and training prior to their first teaching sessions or tasks. The period of appointment will provide sufficient time for preparation of teaching materials, completion of employment forms and payroll paperwork.
