Job description

The Canberra Times is looking for talented and tenacious reporters to join its team covering federal politics and the public sector.
We are reshaping our coverage from Parliament House and have multiple positions open suitable to a range of experience.
Our bureau serves the audiences of Canberra and ACM, Australia's largest independent media organisation with print and digital publications in every state and territory.

We want newsbreakers to help us attract new digital subscribers to the ACM network's already powerful and growing 140,000-strong subscriber base.
We want reporters who love to work as part of a team with a sense of a unique mission.  Enterprising and exclusive reporting is key to our success so the successful candidates will be able to demonstrate a track record of breaking stories in state, territory or federal politics.

Ideas are our currency and we're looking for someone able to pitch clever, unique story plans and turn them into must-read content.
Experience researching, analysing or reporting on government and matters of economics, defence and/or public policy would be an advantage, as would the ability to understand and present data.

The Canberra Times appears in print seven days a week and has a growing audience of digital subscribers who demand and deserve informed, informative and independent reporting on the public sector and federal politics.

We seek a journalist who can demonstrate:

  • An understanding of the workings of government and the role of the public service.
  • Excellence in crafting compelling, accurate and balanced writing - reportage, analysis and commentary - to a high standard of spelling, grammar and style.
  • Proven skills in filing for digital platforms and tight deadlines.
  • A track record in creating quality journalism and collaborating as part of a team.

Your journalism will serve the discerning readership of The Canberra Times in the national capital as well as the nation-wide audiences of Australia's largest independent news publisher.

We are the Trusted Voice in the areas in which we operate.

Disclaimer: We do not accept unsolicited agency resumes and are not responsible for any fees related to unsolicited resumes.
