The role
ALS Geochemistry is looking for a Fire Assayer to work in our Fire Assay section at our facility located in Orange – NSW.
Fire Assay is a pyro-metallurgical process for the analysis of precious metals.
This is a hands-on role requiring strong attention to detail. Working within a team, you will be trained so that you can weigh samples, add flux reagents, fuse the mixture in a high-temperature furnace, and collect precious metals (gold) through cupellation and prilling on a daily basis.
Before sending the sample prills to the laboratory for testing, you'll need to thoroughly inspect the samples, fusion pots, lead buttons and prills to ensure the correctness and record any anomalies.
To be suitable for this role, you must be able to perform the procedure promptly, organized and accurately. In addition, as this will employ a combination of intense heat (900 - 1100°C) produced by a furnace, dry chemicals and refractory materials regularly, you must proactively look out for safety issues and practice fire assay safety procedures.
This full-time position will involve working on a Morning Shift roster: Monday to Friday from 6 am to 2 pm.
Responsibilities include:
- Perform fire assay techniques such as fluxing, fusing and cupellation
- Maintain and record equipment faults
- Maintain productivity and turnaround time
- Correct disposal of cupels and fire assay lead wastes
- Inspecting samples, fusions, lead buttons and prills to ensure the assaying process was correct
- Maintain a clean and tidy working environment
- Ability to follow set procedures and attention to detail
- Strong communication skills, both written and oral
- Ability to work under pressure and to strict deadlines
- Flexible and reliable
- The ability to create and encourage teamwork
- The ability to work in a hot, manual-intensive work environment
- To be flexible and reliable to meet the high demands of the section
This is a residential role, and you must be residing or planning on relocating to Orange - NSW, with current Australian work rights to be considered.
