The role
Reporting to the Chief Midwife, you will be individually accountable for professional standards, aligning practices with strategic directions of the Chief Nursing and Midwifery Officer. Your role involves providing strategic leadership for First Nations programs, leading workforce planning, and ensuring continuous improvement in First Nations maternity and midwifery strategies. You will contribute to the development of information systems, policies, and guidelines while identifying improvement opportunities, addressing emerging trends, and promoting quality governance.
Additionally, you will actively participate in strategic and operational planning, implement key performance indicators, and lead program deliverables under a project management philosophy. Your role includes fostering a positive practice environment, leading change management, and contributing to the development of career pathways for First Nations midwives. Collaboration on professional strategic directions and research in innovative midwifery practices will be essential, as well as working collaboratively with stakeholders at local, national, and international levels to support integrated planning and service delivery.

Additionally, you must affirm Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent, substantiated either through a written assertion or documentary evidence. Your expertise should extend to comprehensive knowledge of Indigenous health issues, particularly in maternal and child health at both national and state levels.
Beyond this, you should possess leadership, analytical, and conceptual skills, with a proven ability to offer strategic advice on First Nations midwifery. Your experience in quality and safety, midwifery governance, health management, policy development, and education, as well as your capacity to collaborate with diverse stakeholders, are crucial. Travel within Queensland and occasionally interstate may be required for this politically sensitive role, which values postgraduate qualifications and rural/remote experience.
