The Rockhampton Grammar School is seeking to employ Food Services Assistants on a casual basis.

Positions will be working between the canteen and dining room.

The Rockhampton Grammar School was founded in 1881 and is an independent co-educational day and boarding school private school, educating and caring for students from Prep to Year 12, as well as the Early Learning Years. The School is the largest independent boarding school in Queensland and the second largest co-educational boarding school in Australia. It is a leading school in regional Queensland and one of the foremost schools in regional Australia. The Rockhampton Grammar School has achieved great success in the academic, cultural, sporting and vocational fields over the past 143 years. The School has a total enrolment of over 1,400 students (Prep to Year 12) who are exposed to our broad curriculum, giving effect to our commitment of Grow in Character and Scholarship.

ABOUT THE ROLE

The position of Food Services/Canteen Assistant plays an integral role in supporting the Food Services Manager in the daily operation of the dining room and canteen.

In this role, you will perform a wide variety of tasks including food preparation for the Early Learning Centre, meal service to boarding students, residential staff and staff, school functions, the canteen as well as kitchen/dining room cleaning as directed by the Food Services Manager or their delegate.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The demands of this role include the ability to be on your feet for the rostered hours and involve a high level of manual handling and physical ability. A capacity to deal with the requirements and demands of meeting service deadlines is required.

General responsibilities common to all Food Services Assistants:

  • Being involved in the preparation and service of food to:
    • Boarding Students;
    • Residential Staff;
    • Staff;
    • School functions;
    • Early Learning Centre;
  • After School Care and Vacation Care;
  • Assist in preparation of orders for School camps/trips/functions;
  • Many and varied cleaning duties, including daily dishwashing and pot washing duties, as well as heavy duty daily, weekly and monthly cleaning;
  • Assist with cleaning of the Kitchen area and all equipment;
  • Cleaning of the dining room after each meal service;
  • Cleaning of storerooms and cold room and keeping stock in these rooms at a constant level;
  • Serving of food to boarders, staff & school guests;
  • Plating up of food;
  • Use knives to prepare salad and fruit;
  • Basic cooking of cakes, biscuits etc.;
  • Preparation of sandwiches;
  • Keep work areas neat and tidy, at all times;
  • Receiving and putting away stock;
  • Organising the dining room for meal service;
  • Setting of table in the boardroom and service of food at boardroom functions, as required;
  • Setting up and serving food and beverages at School functions, as required;
  • Maintaining food preparation and kitchen standards of cleanliness and hygiene so that they comply with the Food Safety Standards;
  • Practicing appropriate work methods to comply with Workplace Health & Safety requirements;
  • Attending staff development programs, when and if appropriate;
  • Maintain the standard of excellence required by the School’s reputation and uphold the philosophy of the School;
  • Work cohesively as a team member and as required, assist team members to ensure all work tasks are completed;
  • Quarterly cleaning duties as per food safety manual, to be done during School holidays;
  • From time to time may be required to work School hire functions/camps during the School holidays;
  • Ensure a safe and hazardous-free workplace environment by reporting any health and safety hazards. Comply with the School’s occupational health and safety policy at all times;
  • Any other duties as directed by the Food Services Manager or their delegate.

General responsibilities common to all Canteen Assistants:

  • Prepare and cook a range of canteen food items such as breakfasts, sandwiches, rolls and wraps, premade items.
  • Cut, prepare and garnish daily salads and fruit.
  • Cut, prepare and cook fresh dishes to recipe.
  • Cut, prepare daily vegetables.
  • Clean and organise refrigerators and freezers.
  • Clean and tidy cook’s working area and pot sink benches.
  • Check off and store all incoming goods.
  • Service of students and handling of money.

Use of EFTPOS machine and online ordering systems as required

  • Security work, requiring the holding of keys and checking of money
  • Other duties as directed by Food Services Manager, Food Services supervisor, Canteen Supervisor their delegate.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE/SKILLS
  • Must have experience working in a fast-paced hospitality environment, worked at events and functions.
  • Hospitality qualifications will be highly regarded.
  • Experience in the provision of Food Services within a School environment or similar preferred, but not essential.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of current food safety practices and standards;
  • Demonstrated understanding of infection control, manual handling, hazard identification;
  • Demonstrated interpersonal, communication and customer service skills;
  • Demonstrated ability to work unsupervised;
  • Immaculate grooming and great communication skills;
  • A positive and can do attitude;
  • Ability to work as part of team to ensure work tasks are completed;
  • Ability to adopt quickly to change of routine;
  • Ability to operate basic kitchen equipment;
  • Basic knife skills.
REQUIRED LICENCES/CERTIFICATES
  • Working with Children Check;
  • Police Check;
  • Safeguarding Children Training.
  • Willing to obtain a Food Handlers Certificate or equivalent

  • Report any suspicions, concerns, allegations or disclosures of alleged abuse to management;
  • Maintain valid “working with children” documentation;
  • Undergo periodic “national criminal history record” checks;
  • Report to management any criminal charges or convictions you receive during the course of your employment that may indicate a possible rick to children and young people.
