About Us:
The Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine (VIFM) is an independent statutory authority governed by the Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine Act 1985 (the VIFM Act). It is part of the Justice portfolio of the Victorian Government.
The VIFM Act creates a joint position of Director of the VIFM and Professor of the Department of Forensic Medicine (DFM) at Monash University. The Director/Professor is responsible for the strategic direction and activities of the DFM, which is housed at the VIFM and operates under the governance of the Monash University Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences.
About the Role:
The primary focus of this position is to provide acute forensic examinations of adult victims of both sexual and physical assault as part of a 24 hour, 7 days a week service. As a Forensic Nurse Examiner (FNE), you will provide an essential service acting as an independent practitioner including (but not limited to) examination of adult victims of physical and sexual assault and family violence, collection of biological and forensic samples, preparation of medico-legal reports and statements, and provision of advice to police and other stakeholders regarding clinical forensic matters.
Some of your duties will include:
  • Examination of complainants and detainees.
  • Obtaining valid consent for procedures.
  • Examination of adults alleged to have been a victim or an offender of an assault.
  • Documentation of injuries verbally, on body diagrams and with photographs.

About You:
As an ideal candidate, you will possess:
  • An understanding or willingness to learn of privacy, confidentiality, security and the principles of bioethics in the medico-legal context.
  • A high level of written and verbal communication skills with the ability to learn to prepare and present objective, impartial statements, and provide evidence in Court.
  • Experience and confidence working as an autonomous practitioner with excellent safeguarding knowledge and understanding.
  • Experience working with vulnerable groups.
Qualifications:
  • A Bachelor of Nursing or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 3 years postgraduate experience with a sound knowledge base and experience in contemporary nursing practice.
  • Current full general registration as a Division 1 Registered Nurse by the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
  • Ability to work across a wide range of sites on a rotating roster consisting of day, afternoon and night shifts (including weekend shifts).
