KLC is seeking a full-time General Counsel for a fixed 12 month term to join our high-performance legal team in Broome, WA.

The main responsibility of this impactful role will be to manage organisational risk through effective corporate governance, contracting and insurance, providing legal services that include a mix of commercial and corporate advisory expertise, all while expanding and enhancing advocacy for and representation of the interests of Kimberley Traditional Owners.

Specifically, you will provide advice in relation to:

• Corporate governance, commercial contracts and risk management 
• Supporting the KLC's high-performing carbon and fire operation, including advising on structuring, insurance and regulatory approvals for projects registered to generate Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs), and supporting expansion into other nature repair commodity markets.
• Contract negotiation, drafting and advice, and development of maintenance procedures
• Working collaboratively across the organisation, demonstrating strong relationship-building and communication skills
• Participating in strategic planning and policy development, supporting the organisation's vision and objectives
• Managing, monitoring, and reporting on legal issues impacting the organisation in alignment with the organisation's strategic plans and best practice corporate governance and statutory obligations as a native title representative body
• Traveling to remote locations as needed, representing the organisation's interests and engaging with stakeholders

Your additional duties will include:

• Assisting in the supervision of and support for teams and supporting the Principal Legal Officer in varied legal matters
• Liaising with internal and external stakeholders to manage expectations and deliver on organisational goals
• Contributing to the organisation's leadership through mentorship and guidance, fostering a collaborative work environment

To qualify, you will need to be admitted to practice law in an Australian jurisdiction and be admitted or immediately eligible for admission in Western Australia.

A minimum of 5 years post-admission experience in commercial or inhouse advisory would be highly regarded. Experience in native title, Indigenous cultural heritage, or nature repair commodities will be beneficial.
