General Mill Worker - Burdekin Region, Qld

Our client is an industry leading agribusiness with sophisticated sugar mill operations located in Townsville and surrounds. They are currently looking to fill 2 General Mill Worker positions across their sites in the Burdekin Region, with work commencing in June 2024.

This is an entry level position and employees at this level could be expected to carry out a very broad range of duties to suit the needs of the business and could be expected to be moved around within the workforce to undertake any required duties. A General Mill Worker must be physically able to perform all the manual tasks that may be required to maintain factory operations and to carry out general maintenance.

You will be paid under the Sugar Industry Award - Level 2, an hourly rate of $28.32 per hour, and seasonal contract (9 months) with an average minimum of 38 hours per week and potential to upskill.

Key duties include:

• Walking over rough terrain to access different parts of the mill.
• Regular squatting, bending, kneeling, stooping and twisting movements.
• Climbing stairs and ladders to access the mill.
• Perform work at a range of heights from ground to overhead.
• Lifting up to 20kg on a regular basis providing it is legal, logical and safe to do so.
• Use of tools such as shovels, picks, mattocks, crowbars, sledgehammers, etc.
• Carrying loads up stairs and ladders.
• Using high impact tools e.g. rattle gun, hammers and jackhammers.
• Climbing on and off machinery, ladders and scaffolding.
• Working within confined space providing they are trained to do so
• Shovelling of waste materials during clean-ups.
• Pushing wheel barrows of waste material for clean-up purposes or for moving materials from place to place.
• Assist tradesmen in the maintenance and repair of mill equipment and machinery.
• Fetching and carrying of parts and tools for tradesmen, holding parts in position, cleaning parts, dismantling machinery and cleaning work sites.
• Assist to manoeuvre objects being moved by cranes. Assist riggers with rigging loads and erecting scaffolds.
• Pulling or pushing loaded trolleys e.g. welders, oxy trolleys or loads of parts.
• Jackhammering and shovelling of concrete.
• Hosing down of floors for clean-up purposes.
• Using pedestal and portable grinders.
• Team lifting of lengths of steel and pipework.
• Performing general housekeeping around the factory.
• Typical tasks for a Process operator Level 2 as outlined in the current EA
• Ensure permits to work, risk assessments and job safety analysis are conducted for all work undertaken
• Working at Heights required

This is a level 2 position, an employee at this level is required to:

• Work under supervision.
• Exercise decision making/responsibility within their level of skill and training.
• Demonstrate awareness of general quality control standards, in particular responsibility for their own work and advise of quality control problems where identified.
• Assist with on the job training.
• Service and adjust equipment according to their level of skill and training, and advise of any additional maintenance required.
• Demonstrate general housekeeping skills.
• Demonstrate ability to use common language skills to engage in communication and to read and understand written and oral communications plus prepare records that convey information accurately and concisely.
