Practice Information:
This private medical practice is owned by the Girudala Community Co-Operative Society (www.girudala.com.au) which is a local indigenous community organization that also runs a housing co-operative and many health, family support and employment projects. The centre will run as a mixed fee for service and bulk billing practice with a focus on preventative health care and management of chronic illness. It has been operating from July 2010 and is open to the whole community. The Centre has 2 consulting rooms, a procedure room, staff room and 2 areas for visiting allied health specialists on the main street on Bowen. On staff are a 1 Locum General Practitioner, Registered Nurse, Enrolled Nurse, 2 x Indigenous Health Worker, Practice Manager and a Receptionist. The centre is situated in a duplex setting with a private dental practice as a neighbour. The successful applicants will be seeing some Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander clients, utilising the Close the Gap Initiative for Indigenous Health including the Practice Incentive Program (PIP) and PBS Co-Payment Scheme. The practice would like their staff to be community minded and support the community not for profit sector. They would also like staff to possess a healthy appreciation of and commit to utilise chronic disease prevention and management community health programs on offer in community. You can fly to Brisbane from the Proserpine airport, and most capital cities in Australia from Mackay or Townsville. There are many investment opportunities in this community with the mining boom and growth in tourism.
Mixed Billing Practice
Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday between 8.00am and 5pm, Lunch 12:30 – 1:30
Thursday & Friday between 7:00am and 3pm, Lunch 11:15 – 12:15
Position Description:
1.5 to 2 years contract minimum
Preference given to applicant that is familiar with Medical Director and Pracsoft 4.0a software.
This practice is not an AMS, but they do focus on Indigenous Health so they would like the doctor to be familiar or willing to learn and perform ATSI Health Check, Health Checks and Care Plans
The General Practitioner will be expected to perform Pap Smears.
Main Purpose of the General Practitioner:
The General Practitioner role is to provide comprehensive medical care to individuals, families and communities (from initial consultation to follow up) on simple and complex health conditions. The General Practitioner provides a range of health services ranging from prevention of illness through to treatment and rehabilitation. The position requires consultation with other health professionals internally (eg Nurse, Aboriginal Health Worker) and externally (eg specialist) as required, with coordination and ongoing care relating back to the General Practitioner. General practitioners in this role continue to assist patients and the community by providing ongoing education, participating in health promotion, conducting research and assisting training to colleagues and other health professionals.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS - CLINICAL
Competencies and specific tasks include the following but are not limited to this list:
Medical
Diagnoses of treatment of Diabetes Mellitus and other endocrine and metabolic diseases Respiratory diseases eg asthma, COPD Digestive diseases eg Gastroenteritis Neurological conditions including epilepsy, MS Cardiovascular disease, including hypertension, hypercholesterolaemia, ischaemic heart disease Chronic ulcers
Diseases of the eye Diseases of the ear, nose and throat Dermatological conditions and treatment, including skin cancers, rashes, solar kerotosis, psoriasis, eczema, dermatitis, basal cell carcinoma Cancer Dermatitis Circulatory problems eg relating to ischemic heart disease Blood disorders Urological conditions, including urinary tract infections, prostrate disease Sexually transmitted disease diagnosis Musculoskeletal problem diagnosis Neurological problem diagnosis Management of wide range of paediatric conditions Follow up patients recently discharged from hospital and referred to hospital and specialist eg dermatologist.
Ability to perform such tasks as:
Vaccination including childhood and travel ECG (interpretation and emergency), spirometry Pulmonary function test Liaise with community supports eg community nursing for elderly, Girudala Community Health Programs Wound care, splints and plasters Blood and urine test IV cannulation and venepuncture
Major medical assessment Physical examinations, including all systems of body Breast examination
Testicular examination
Eye and ear examinations eg for FB in eye and ear syringing
Sexually transmitted disease checks Medication prescription
Counselling advice Preventative health care
Surgical
Suturing lacerations
Excision and drainage of abscess
Excision of skin lesions eg BCC and SCC
Cryotherapy
Removal of cysts
Removal of ingrown toenail
Obstetrics and Gynaecology
Family planning eg contraceptive advice, counselling for termination of pregnancy, fitting/ removing intrauterine contraceptive devices
Prenatal care Postnatal care
Undertaking pap smears and checks for sexually transmitted infections
Appropriate counselling, management and advice of above conditions
Anaesthetics
Local anaesthetics techniques simple anaesthetic blocks, eg finger and toe blocks
Emergency
Management of acute medical/ surgical emergencies eg myocardial infarction, hypoglycaemia
Basic or advanced life support
Mental Health
Treatment of depression, anxiety and other common conditions presenting to general practice
Management of patients with severe psychiatric illness, including bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and referral to specialists where appropriate
Treatment and referral for drug and alcohol abuse conditions.
After Hours Requirements: No
Salary Information: Percentage of Billings. $250,000 - $330,000 approximately (dependent on the individual doctors billings).
Qualifications & Experience:
Registration with the Medical Board of Australia (AHPRA)
The General Practitioner will need General Registration as the practice cannot provide supervision
GP skills and experience
